The Collagen Calendar: When to Start Energy Treatments for Christmas, New Year and a Spring Wedding
Energy treatments do not finish working when you leave the clinic. Radiofrequency, ultrasound and laser all start a collagen response that builds over weeks and months, so the date you start decides what you will see on the date that matters. For most lifting and tightening treatments the useful planning window is around three months. If there is a Christmas party, a New Year away or a spring wedding in the diary, early October is the moment to begin, not the week before.
This is the part of device treatments that is easiest to get wrong. Injectables are judged on the day; collagen is judged months later. A patient who books XERF ten days before a wedding will feel a difference, and will be looking at the best of it in the honeymoon photographs rather than the wedding ones. The fix is not a stronger treatment. It is a calendar.
Key takeaways
- Most lifting and tightening treatments build over two to three months, so count back three months from the event.
- XERF can feel tighter on the day, with collagen remodelling continuing over the following three months.
- EMFACE is a course of four sessions; results are optimal around 90 days.
- Endolift develops over around six months: the one to book in autumn for spring and summer.
- BBL HEROic and LaseMD Ultra need skin without a recent tan, which makes autumn the natural start.
- Treatments with recovery time go early in a plan; hands-free ones go last.
Why collagen sets the timetable
Every energy device in the Advanced Laser and Radio Frequency range works by delivering controlled heat or energy into the skin and letting the body respond. The response has two speeds. The first is immediate: heat makes existing collagen fibres contract, which is why some treatments give a tighter feeling the same day. The second is slow: the skin lays down new collagen and remodels what is there, and that takes weeks to months.
Dr Nina explained it to SheerLuxe in the context of XERF: immediately after treatment, controlled heating causes existing collagen fibres to contract, so patients often feel and see an immediate tightening, particularly around the jawline and lower face. XERF also stimulates new collagen production and remodelling of the skin, so the results continue to develop over the following three months.
That's only the beginning of the response.
The same principle runs through the whole range, at different speeds. That is what the calendar below is built on.
The calendar, treatment by treatment
| Treatment | Course | When results show | Start by, for a mid-December event |
|---|---|---|---|
| XERF | Number of sessions agreed at consultation; about an hour each | A tighter feeling on the day; progressive over around three months | September for the full effect; October for visible change plus a strong January |
| EMFACE | Usually 4 sessions, about 20 minutes each, 1 to 2 weeks apart | Felt early; optimal around 90 days | Early October |
| HIFU | A course of three is recommended | Builds over 2 to 3 months, developing up to around 6 | September to early October |
| InMode Contoura | Usually 4 to 6 sessions, 1 to 2 weeks apart | Felt early; develops as collagen rebuilds | October |
| Endolift | Planned at consultation; local anaesthetic | Develops over around 6 months | Best planned for spring or summer events |
| Lynton Focus Dual | Usually 2 to 4 sessions, about 6 weeks apart | Builds from 2 to 3 weeks; optimal over 3 to 6 months | Best planned for spring events |
| BBL HEROic | Typically around 3 sessions | Often visible after 1 to 2 sessions | October, so the last session is well before the event |
| LaseMD Ultra | 3 to 5 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart | Brighter, smoother skin over weeks one to four after each session | Now, for a course that carries into the new year |
The timings are drawn from each treatment page and are typical rather than promised. Skin responds at its own pace, and the number of sessions for XERF, Endolift and HIFU is set at consultation for your skin rather than sold as a package.
If the event is Christmas
Starting now is a good position to be in. A plan built this month can combine a collagen treatment for structure with a light treatment for tone, and still have the recovery days fall well clear of December. For lower-face firmness, XERF or HIFU started in October gives early change by Christmas and most of the result in January. For a softening jawline and cheeks with no recovery time at all, an EMFACE course of four, one to two weeks apart, finishes by mid-November and keeps improving through the party season.
For tone, autumn is when BBL HEROic makes the most sense. The summer has brought pigment to the surface, the tan has faded, and there is time for the darker spots to flake away between sessions. MilliOnAir's Juliet Herd wrote about her own course at the clinic this autumn, and what she describes is exactly this: a gentle first session timed around a holiday, then a more targeted second one on stubborn brown patches.
If the event is a spring wedding
This is where the slower, deeper treatments come into their own. Endolift, the fibre laser for early-to-moderate laxity of the lower face, jawline and under-chin, develops over around six months, which makes an autumn or early winter start right for a wedding in April or May. Lynton Focus Dual, a combination of HIFU and radiofrequency microneedling, is a course of two to four sessions six weeks apart, which also wants a winter start.
A course of LaseMD Ultra for tone, texture and pores fits neatly into the darker months, when sun exposure is low and SPF is easy to keep up, and finishes before the first strong sun of the year.
Three months out
Collagen treatments start: XERF, HIFU, EMFACE, Contoura.
Six to eight weeks out
Light and laser sessions for tone, while there is time to settle.
The last fortnight
Hands-free treatments only, or nothing new at all.
What not to do in the last two weeks
The common mistake is not starting too late. It is trying something new too close to the event. After BBL HEROic darker pigmented spots can look darker for a few days before they flake, which is the treatment working, and not what anyone wants in photographs. Radiofrequency microneedling leaves the skin red and warm for around a day or two. LaseMD Ultra brings one to three days of redness and light flaking. None of these is long, but all of them belong earlier in the plan.
The final fortnight is for the treatments with no recovery time, maintenance sessions of something the skin already knows, and nothing that has never been tried before.
A considered next step
Have a date in the diary?
Bring it to the consultation. Dr Nina will work back from it, choose what your skin needs and put each treatment where its recovery and its results fall in the right place.
What a calendar cannot do
Timing makes the most of a treatment. It does not change what that treatment is for. None of these devices replaces a surgical facelift, and none of them removes significant excess skin. Light and laser treatments improve tone and texture but do not lift. Lifting treatments firm and define but do not correct pigment. The consultation exists to match the concern to the right energy before anything is booked, and to say plainly when the answer is a different route, including a referral.
If you are not sure which concern is yours, the sagging skin, jawline and jowls and pigmentation and sun damage guides are a good place to start, and the Journal's guide to advanced laser and radio frequency explains which device works on which layer of the skin.
Common questions
Your questions, answered
-
Around three months is the useful rule. Collagen-building treatments such as XERF, EMFACE and HIFU give some early change, but most of the result builds over the following eight to twelve weeks. Starting in early October puts the bulk of that change in place for January, with visible early change by Christmas. Endolift develops over around six months, so it suits an event further away.
-
Not for everything. XERF often gives an immediate tighter feeling on the day, InMode Contoura is a course of four to six sessions one to two weeks apart, and BBL HEROic usually shows visible change after one or two sessions. What it is too late for is expecting the full collagen response of a course that has only just begun. The consultation is where that is set out plainly.
-
Anything with even a few days of visible recovery. After BBL HEROic darker spots can look darker for a few days before they flake away, LaseMD Ultra brings one to three days of redness and light flaking, and radiofrequency microneedling leaves a warm, sunburn-like redness for about 24 to 48 hours. Hands-free treatments such as EMFACE have no recovery time, which is why they are often the last ones in a plan.
-
Because light-based treatment cannot be done on recently tanned or sun-exposed skin, and summer has usually darkened pigment that was faint in spring. In autumn the tan has faded, the sun is weaker, and a course can finish before the next summer starts.
-
Often, yes, but they are sequenced rather than stacked on the same day by default, because a resurfacing treatment and a deep heating treatment ask different things of the same skin while it recovers. A typical plan puts the treatments with recovery time early and the hands-free ones late. Dr Nina sets the order at consultation.
-
It depends on the treatment. Dr Nina explains that after XERF, maintenance may be appropriate once or twice a year. Endolift results develop over around six months and can last years with care. EMFACE and InMode Contoura may be maintained with occasional sessions. The ageing process carries on, which is why the plan includes maintenance rather than a single visit.
