"I’ve seen Dr. Nina twice now for lip augmentation, and honestly I couldn’t recommend her enough! The care she took in ensuring she knew what I wanted, as well as keeping me safe was more than any other practitioner I have been with. I have superficial blood vessels, so I am more prone to having complications, and she explained this to me and took all the necessary measures to ensure I got fabulous results while still being safe. I know that I can always contact her if anything worries me and for me that is paramount. Coming from a medical background it’s difficult to find someone I can trust, and after meeting lots of facial aesthetics doctors/dentists I know that I’ll be sticking with her! Also, she gives very helpful information on her instagram and TikTok!"

The treatment
What is XERF?
XERF™ (Extended Energy Radio Frequency) is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment developed by Cynosure Lutronic. Unlike conventional radiofrequency treatments, it delivers RF energy deeper into the skin, reaching the shallow, middle and deep layers, where its makers describe real structural change beginning.
The treatment uses multi-depth technology to remodel the structure of tissue and restore firmness subdermally, through collagen and elastin thickening, strengthening and shortening. Each pulse uses Wave Fit™ pulse technology balanced with Integrated Cryogen Delivery (ICD) cooling, which monitors the temperature of your skin throughout, so the treatment feels warm and comfortable, with no needles and no numbing required.
XERF sits within our advanced laser & radiofrequency portfolio at the South Kensington clinic, alongside HIFU, InMode Contoura and Endolift®. As with every treatment here, it is offered assessment first: if another option suits your skin better, we will say so.
Real results
Before & after XERF
The photographs shown here are clinical before and after images for the XERF treatment, including results after a single treatment and after two treatments. They illustrate the kind of structural tightening of the lower face, jawline and profile the treatment is designed to achieve.
As our own patients complete their XERF courses at the South Kensington clinic, their results will be added here, assessed and photographed to the same standard we apply across every treatment page. Until then these clinical images are the manufacturer’s, and we label them as such rather than presenting them as our own work.
Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Photographs are clinical before and after images shown to illustrate the treatment and are not a promise of a specific outcome.

The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina BalBefore treatment
What happens at your consultation
A consultation is required before XERF. During your consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a clinical assessment and your eligibility for treatment reviewed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail, what to expect during and after, and given the opportunity to ask questions.
The consultation covers your medical history, a facial-anatomy assessment, your suitability and any contraindications, realistic expected outcomes, alternatives if XERF is not ideal, consent, aftercare, and confirmation of your individual plan and pricing in writing. You are never under any obligation to proceed.
Results & recovery
What to expect afterwards
XERF has no downtime: you can go back to work and most daily activities immediately after treatment. The treatment itself feels warm and comfortable thanks to ICD cooling and Wave Fit™ pulse technology, with no needles and no numbing required. There is still short aftercare to follow, and we give it to you in writing before you leave.
Your aftercare: leave the skin alone for the first two to three hours, and no make-up for 24 hours. Avoid exercise for 24 hours, and hot baths, hot showers, saunas and swimming pools for 72 hours. Do not use an ice pack or cooling pack on the treated area. Moisturise daily, avoid cosmetics containing alcohol for the first week, and wear SPF 50 every day for two to three weeks, staying out of direct sun for a month. Mild redness is normal and usually settles within 24 hours, and the skin can feel dry for up to ten days. These instructions come from the XERF clinical guidance and your team will go through them with you.
How results develop: patients describe an immediately tighter feeling in the skin, and in the weeks after treatment collagen continues to rebuild, enhancing the skin’s appearance over time. The number of sessions depends on your individual skin condition and goals, and is planned with you.
Typical results timeline
An immediately tighter feeling in the skin. Back to work and most daily activities right away, leaving the skin itself alone for two to three hours.
No make-up and no exercise for 24 hours. No hot baths, hot showers, saunas or swimming for three days.
Collagen rebuilding gets underway in the treated layers. A daily moisturiser and SPF 50 for two to three weeks, and the skin can feel dry for up to ten days.
Skin appearance continues to enhance as collagen remodelling progresses. Direct sun is best avoided for a month.
Reviews and any recommended further sessions are planned around your individual goals.
Safety
Possible risks & side effects
As with any medical aesthetic procedure, XERF carries some risks, even though it is non-invasive. Temporary warmth, redness or tenderness in the treated area can occur after radiofrequency treatments and usually settles quickly. Individual risks are discussed openly at your consultation before any treatment.
Careful patient selection, personalised settings and an experienced clinical team are important for reducing avoidable risks. If anything feels unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice at any time.
Limitations
What XERF cannot do
- It cannot remove significant excess skin or replace a surgical facelift.
- It is not an instant transformation: the collagen response builds over weeks.
- The number of sessions needed varies with your individual skin condition and goals.
- Final suitability can only be confirmed at a face to face consultation.

What our patients say about Facial Sculpting Clinic
Real reviews from patients who chose Dr Nina Bal and the Facial Sculpting team.
I recently visited Dr Nina at her Belgravia clinic and had the most wonderful experience, she is so skilled at what she does, super professional and not mention just lovely! She made me feel completely at ease and comfortable whilst talking through the procedures with great knowledge. I had Botox and profhilo with Dr Nina and it’s been a little over a week since the treatments and I am completely over the moon with my results, my skin has never been so glowy and radiant. I can’t wait for my next session in a few weeks.
Dr Nina, Grace and Olivia are all lovely, trust their work and knowledge
Beautiful clinic and brilliant treatments available. Dr Nina is very talented and lovely to deal with!
I first went to see Dr Nina for Bruxism. Having already faced fillings from the grinding, and wearing a mouth guard every night, I was still regularly getting migraines and ice pick headaches, exacerbated from the daily tension in my jaw. My temples were always tender, and I’d wake up every morning tense and sore. This has been such a life-changing procedure, and now I start the day from a place of much greater relaxation, I’m able to deal with the stress of work and every day life with far more ease, I’m sleeping better, and if I wake in the night, I’m still amazed and grateful to find that my jaw is relaxed. I’m looking forward to trusting Dr. Nina with further treatments! Thanks Dr Nina!
I have never had laser treatment before but having just turned 47, I have started to notice ageing on my face and neck. I was feeling self conscious about the sagginess in my neck and the lines around my lips and chin, I didn’t want harsh surgery, so I decided to try Endolift, a non evasive treatment, with Dr Nina Bal. I cannot recommend Dr Nina, Endolift and her clinic enough. From the moment I entered the clinic I was made to feel relaxed and welcome. Dr Nina and her team were amazing throughout, the treatment was relatively quick and pain free. It has only been a week but I can already see fantastic results, and love what the treatment has done for me. Thanks Dr Nina, I will definitely be back.
Your questions
XERF FAQs
What is XERF?
XERF™ (Extended Energy Radio Frequency) is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment developed by Cynosure Lutronic, described by its makers as Structural Skin Tightening. It is the world’s first multifrequency monopolar RF treatment, delivering radiofrequency energy into the shallow, middle and deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin and restore firmness from within, with no needles, no numbing and no downtime.
Where can I have XERF in London?
XERF is available at Facial Sculpting, 313 Brompton Road, South Kensington, London SW3 2DY, a short walk from South Kensington and Knightsbridge. Treatments are carried out by Dr Nina Bal and her clinical team after a face to face consultation, and the clinic is Save Face Platinum accredited.
How much does XERF cost in London?
At Facial Sculpting, XERF is £2,600 per session for the face and £3,000 per session for the face and neck. The number of sessions you need depends on your individual skin condition and goals and is planned with you at consultation, where your exact plan and price are confirmed in writing before anything goes ahead, with no obligation to proceed.
How many XERF sessions will I need?
It depends on your skin and what you want to change, so the number is agreed with you at consultation rather than sold as a fixed package. The clinical images on this page show results after one treatment and after two treatments. Your plan is reviewed as your collagen response develops, and we will tell you if further sessions are unlikely to add much.
How is XERF different from other radiofrequency treatments?
Conventional radiofrequency treatments work at a single frequency and a fixed depth. XERF is multifrequency, so it reaches the shallow, middle and deep layers of the skin in the same treatment. It combines that with Wave Fit™ pulse technology and Integrated Cryogen Delivery (ICD) cooling, which monitors your skin temperature in real time and keeps the treatment comfortable without needles or numbing.
XERF or RF microneedling: what is the difference?
RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency through fine needles that pass into the skin, which suits texture, scarring and firmness and involves some recovery. XERF delivers radiofrequency through the surface of the skin with no needles and no downtime, and is aimed at structural tightening of the face, jawline and neck. Both are offered at the clinic, and which one suits you is decided at consultation, not in advance. You can read about our RF microneedling treatment too.
XERF or HIFU: which is right for me?
HIFU uses focused ultrasound to lift at specific depths and suits mild to moderate laxity of the brow, jaw and neck. XERF uses multifrequency radiofrequency across three depths in one session and is aimed at overall structural tightening with no downtime. They are different tools rather than better or worse, and Dr Nina will recommend one over the other based on your skin, your anatomy and your goals. Our HIFU page explains that route in full.
Does XERF hurt?
No. Comfort is built into the treatment. XERF feels warm and comfortable thanks to ICD cooling and Wave Fit™ pulses, and unlike many tightening treatments there are no needles and no numbing required. Your practitioner sets the intensity to you across ten levels and adjusts it during the session.
How long does a XERF treatment take?
A session usually takes about 45 minutes, although this varies with the areas being treated. There is no numbing time to add beforehand and no recovery time afterwards, so most patients are in and out within the hour.
Is there any downtime after XERF?
No. You can resume most daily activities immediately after treatment, which is one of the reasons XERF fits easily into a working week. There is short aftercare to follow: leave the skin alone for two to three hours, no make-up or exercise for 24 hours, no hot baths, saunas or swimming for 72 hours, and daily SPF 50 for two to three weeks. Mild redness is normal and usually settles within 24 hours.
When will I see results from XERF?
Patients describe an immediately tighter feeling in the skin straight after treatment. The visible change builds gradually as collagen rebuilds in the treated layers over the following weeks, so XERF is a progressive result rather than an instant transformation. Individual results vary and are discussed openly at consultation.
How long do XERF results last?
Radiofrequency tightening works by stimulating your own collagen, so how long the result holds depends on your skin, your age, your genetics and how you look after your skin afterwards. Skin continues to age after any treatment, so results are maintained rather than permanent. We plan reviews with you and will recommend a maintenance interval based on what your skin actually does, not on a fixed schedule.
Can XERF treat the neck and jawline?
Yes. XERF is used across the face, the jawline and the neck, and the face and neck can be treated together in the same session. Loss of jawline definition and neck laxity are two of the most common reasons patients ask about it. You can read more about jawline definition and jowls and sagging skin and laxity.
Is XERF suitable for all skin types?
The manufacturer describes XERF as appropriate for all skin types, and each treatment is tailored to your skin profile using three depth settings and ten intensity levels. Your individual suitability is always confirmed at a face to face consultation, where your medical history and skin are assessed properly.
Who is not suitable for XERF?
XERF is not the right treatment where there is significant excess skin or advanced sagging that needs surgical assessment, and it is generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, over an active infection or skin condition in the treatment area, and with certain implants, devices or medical conditions identified at consultation. If you are expecting a surgery level lift from a non-invasive treatment, we will tell you plainly that XERF cannot do that.
Is XERF safe?
XERF is non-invasive and the handpiece monitors your skin temperature in real time through the Spider Tip applicator, with Integrated Cryogen Delivery cooling the skin as energy is delivered. As with any medical aesthetic procedure there are still risks, most commonly temporary warmth, redness or tenderness that settles quickly. Careful assessment, personalised settings and an experienced clinical team matter, and your individual risks are discussed openly before you consent to anything.
Can XERF be combined with other treatments?
Do I need a consultation before XERF?
Yes. A consultation is required before any XERF treatment, to assess your skin, facial anatomy, medical history and goals, and to confirm whether XERF is the right option or whether another treatment would serve you better. You leave with your plan and exact pricing in writing and no obligation to proceed.
