"Dottor Nina super star! The clinic is beautiful, it makes you feel safe doing any procedure. I had my lips done twice in other places and I was in pain and also my lips looked too big, duck lips. Dottor Nina made my lips look beautiful and natural, she adviced not to go too much, so we did only 0.5ml. I did not feel pain during the procedure and my lips have only small bruises. The nurse also was very nice, she took care of my baby. I would definitely recommend dottor Nina. Price wise is a bit higher than the average but worth it. I will definitely go back. Maria"

The treatment
What is Lip Enhancement?
Lip enhancement is a non-surgical treatment that injects cross-linked hyaluronic-acid (HA) dermal filler into the lips to restore or add volume, refine shape and improve definition. HA is a substance the body makes naturally; in the lips it adds soft, hydrated volume and can rebuild the structure the ageing process gradually takes away. The treatment can also correct asymmetry, define the vermilion border and enhance the Cupid’s bow.
With age the lips tend to lose fullness and projection, the upper lip lengthens, the Cupid’s bow flattens and fine lines appear — so lip filler is as much about restoring shape as adding size. Dr Nina’s aim is a sultry yet natural look, usually with the lower lip a little fuller than the upper, in proportion to the rest of your face. The philosophy is firmly less is more: if you have very thin lips, building gradually over a couple of sessions gives a fuller but still natural result rather than over-filling in one visit.
Lip enhancement is one part of how we balance the lower face — it pairs naturally with cheek fillers, treatment of the nose-to-mouth lines and chin sculpting. See the honest limitations below.
Concerns it can help
What does Lip Enhancement address?
Lip enhancement is designed for natural volume, shape, definition and balance of the lips.
Honest suitability
Is Lip Enhancement right for you?
Lip filler is not for everyone — and we will tell you if it is not the best option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.
Often well suited
- Naturally thin lips or volume lost with age
- Wanting subtle definition of the lip border and Cupid’s bow
- Mild asymmetry you would like better balanced
- A preference for a soft, natural look over a dramatic one
- Happy to build gradually over more than one session if advised
- Realistic expectations and good general health
May not be suitable
- An active cold sore or history of frequent cold sores (may need prophylaxis)
- Active infection or inflammation around the mouth
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (subject to clinic policy)
- A history of severe allergy or certain autoimmune conditions
- Wanting a very large, obviously over-filled result
- Body-image concerns that filler is unlikely to resolve
The process
How Lip Enhancement works, step by step
- Consultation & assessmentDr Nina or the team assess your lips and facial proportions, review your medical history and goals, and confirm whether lip filler is suitable for you.
- Design your lipsTogether you agree the look — how much volume, the shape, the balance between upper and lower lip — in proportion to your face.
- ComfortA topical anaesthetic can be applied and most lip fillers contain local anaesthetic, so the treatment is comfortable for most patients.
- Precise injectionSmall amounts of HA filler are placed into the body or border of the lips and gently shaped for an even, natural result.
- Review & aftercareYou see an immediate change, receive aftercare advice, and any refinement is best judged once swelling settles at around two weeks.
“A less-is-more philosophy: lip filler designed for your face — sultry yet natural, never overdone.”
The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina BalBefore treatment
What happens at your consultation
A consultation is recommended before lip enhancement. During your initial consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will discuss the look you want, have your lips and facial proportions assessed, your medical history reviewed and your suitability confirmed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail and given the opportunity to ask questions.
The consultation covers your goals, realistic expected outcomes, whether a staged build is advisable for thin lips, alternatives if filler is not ideal, the possibility of dissolving with hyalase, cold-sore precautions where relevant, aftercare, and confirmation of your individual plan and price.
Results & recovery
What to expect afterwards
Lip enhancement involves minimal downtime and most patients return to their day straight away, though the lips are one of the more swelling-prone areas. Swelling for a day or two is normal and expected, and some bruising or tenderness is possible. We advise avoiding makeup and lipstick on the lips for the first 48 hours, and most patients prefer not to schedule treatment immediately before a big event.
Results & longevity: the change is visible immediately, but the lips look their best once swelling settles, usually within about two weeks. Lip filler is not permanent — the body gradually breaks down the HA, and results typically last around four to eight months. Most patients choose a top-up every four to six months to maintain their shape and volume; longevity varies with metabolism and lifestyle.
Typical results timeline
Immediate fullness, with swelling that can make the lips look larger at first.
Swelling peaks then begins to settle; any bruising starts to fade.
Filler has integrated and swelling has resolved — the true result.
Volume gradually softens; a top-up maintains the shape and fullness.
Safety
Possible risks & side effects
As with any dermal filler, lip filler carries some risks. The lips swell and bruise more readily than many areas, so temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps are common and usually settle within days to a couple of weeks. Cold sores can be triggered in those prone to them, so let us know your history. Less common risks such as infection or lumps that need adjusting are discussed at consultation.
A rare but serious risk of any facial filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel (vascular occlusion), which is why a medically trained injector and a clinic that stocks hyalase are important. HA lip filler is reversible and can be dissolved if you are unhappy or in the event of a complication. If anything is unexpected after treatment, contact the clinic for advice.
Honest limitations
What Lip Enhancement cannot do
- It adds volume and shape — it cannot remove all fine lines around the mouth on its own.
- It cannot create an unnaturally large result that still looks natural — proportion matters.
- Very thin lips may need a staged build rather than one large session.
- It is temporary — maintenance is needed to keep the result.
Compare your options
Lip Enhancement vs other approaches
A simple, honest comparison to help you and Dr Nina choose the right route for the lips and mouth area.
| Approach | Best for | Invasiveness | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lip filler (HA) | Adding lip volume, shape & definition | Minimally invasive injectable | Minimal |
| Anti-Wrinkle Injections | Relaxing muscles — e.g. a “lip flip” or smoker’s lines | Minimally invasive injectable | Minimal |
| Marionette / Nose-to-mouth filler | Softening lines around the mouth, not the lips themselves | Minimally invasive injectable | Minimal |
| Profhilo® | Skin quality and hydration around the mouth (not lip volume) | Non-surgical injectable | Minimal |
Lip filler adds volume; anti-wrinkle injections relax muscle and are a different tool. The two are sometimes used together — for example a subtle lip flip with filler — and the right plan is discussed honestly at consultation.

What our patients say about Facial Sculpting Clinic
Real reviews from patients who chose Dr Nina Bal and the Facial Sculpting team.
Fantastic service and beautiful results! I had dermal fillers in both the lips and chin, Nina thoroughly understood the results that i was looking for and executed this perfectly. Would highly recommend!
I really love the treatment today, can’t wait to see Dr Nina again
I recently had a virtual consultation with Dr Nina for my melasma condition. I have been trying many different treatment options over the past year since it has developed and nothing really seemed to work. Dr Nina prescribed a variety of medical grade treatments and only after TEN (this is not at all an exaggeration) days the melasma on my cheeks has significantly reduced to the point that my friend said she couldn’t even see it. Not only has this experience improved my skin’s condition, but it has helped my mental health and confidence dramatically. Dr Nina is extremely personable, charming and I felt that she really understood my concerns. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her and I would 100% go back for other treatments, as she has gained my full trust.
I was introduced to Dr Nina by a friend and I can’t rate her professionalism and work highly enough. Dr Nina put me at my ease from the first moment we met. I was feeling very problemed with my jawline and marionette lines on either side of my mouth Dr Nina prescribed Endolift facial sculpting. Within under one hour of me lying on her couch for the treatment I looked like a new woman. To say that I was exceedingly pleased with the procedure is an understatement. I will definitely be returning for further Endolift work, and actually sharing this fabulous clinician with good friends KB LONDON
Beautiful clinic and brilliant treatments available. Dr Nina is very talented and lovely to deal with!
Your questions
Lip Enhancement FAQs
What is lip enhancement?
Lip enhancement, or lip filler, is a non-surgical treatment in which hyaluronic-acid dermal filler is injected into or around the lips to add volume, refine the shape and improve definition and balance. Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body makes naturally, giving soft, hydrated fullness.
How much do lip fillers cost in London?
Lip enhancement at Facial Sculpting starts from £565 for 0.5ml and from £700 for 1ml of hyaluronic-acid filler. The right amount for you depends on your starting point and the look you want, which is agreed at consultation along with your final price.
Do lip fillers hurt?
The lips are sensitive, but the treatment is well tolerated by most patients. A topical anaesthetic can be applied beforehand and most lip fillers also contain local anaesthetic, so you typically feel a small scratch and some pressure rather than significant pain.
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip filler typically lasts between four and eight months. The lips are mobile, so filler tends to break down a little faster here than in some other areas. Most people choose a top-up every four to six months to maintain their desired size and shape; longevity varies with metabolism and lifestyle.
Will my lips look natural?
They should. Dr Nina works to a less-is-more philosophy, designing the lips in proportion to your face — usually with the lower lip a little fuller than the upper — so the result looks like a refreshed, balanced version of your own lips rather than an obvious enhancement. If you have very thin lips, building over more than one session helps keep things natural.
Can lip fillers be dissolved?
Yes. Because we use hyaluronic-acid filler, lip filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase (hyalase). This makes the treatment reversible, which is reassuring if you change your mind, want an adjustment, or in the rare event of a complication. See our hyalase page for more.
How much filler do I need for my lips?
Many patients start with 0.5ml for a subtle enhancement or 1ml for fuller volume. The right amount depends on your natural lips and goals. Dr Nina will recommend a sensible starting point and, for thin lips, may suggest building gradually over a couple of sessions rather than placing a lot at once.
Why are my lips swollen after filler?
The lips swell more readily than most areas, so swelling for a day or two is completely normal and part of the healing process. Your lips can look larger than the final result at first; this settles over the following days. A little bruising is also possible. We give you aftercare advice to help.
How long do lip fillers take to settle?
You see fuller lips immediately, but because of swelling the lips look their best once it settles, usually within about two weeks. We recommend judging your final result, and arranging any refinement, at around the two-week point.
Can I smile, eat and kiss after lip fillers?
Yes — normal expressions including smiling are unaffected, and the treatment is designed to look and feel natural. We do advise avoiding makeup on the lips and excessive pressure (such as firm kissing) for the first day or two while the area settles, and most patients find their lips feel soft and natural once healed.
What is a lip flip and is it the same as lip filler?
No. A lip flip uses a small amount of anti-wrinkle injection to relax the muscle and gently roll the upper lip outward, while lip filler adds actual volume with hyaluronic acid. They achieve different things and are sometimes combined. Dr Nina will advise which suits your goal at consultation.
When can I wear lipstick after lip filler?
We generally advise leaving the lips free of makeup and lipstick for the first 48 hours to keep the injection points clean and reduce the risk of infection. After that you can return to your usual routine, following the specific aftercare given to you.
Are lip fillers safe?
Hyaluronic-acid lip filler has a long track record when performed by a trained medical injector. Common effects such as swelling and bruising are temporary; rare risks, including vascular complications, are minimised by careful technique and a clinic that stocks hyalase. If you are prone to cold sores, tell us so we can take precautions. Suitability and risks are discussed in full at consultation.
Is a consultation required before lip filler?
A consultation is recommended to assess your lips and facial proportions, review your medical history including any cold-sore history, agree the look you want, discuss realistic outcomes and reversibility, and confirm your individual plan and price before any treatment.
