Treatment summary

Jawline slimming & bruxism at a glance

Jawline slimming uses botulinum toxin type A injected into the masseter muscles — the powerful muscles at the angle of the jaw used for chewing. By relaxing these muscles it can soften a wide or square jawline and relieve the clenching, grinding and jaw tension of bruxism. It treats both an aesthetic concern and a functional one, and results vary from person to person.

What it treats
A wide or square jaw, enlarged masseters, teeth grinding (bruxism) & jaw tension
How it works
Botulinum toxin relaxes the masseter, reducing clenching force and muscle bulk over time
Areas
The masseter muscles at the angle of the jaw, both sides
Anaesthetic
None usually needed — fine needles
Onset
Grinding and tension often ease within days; visible slimming develops over weeks
Downtime
Minimal — most return to normal activities the same day
Results & longevity
Typically last around 3–4 months; repeat sessions maintain and build the effect

The treatment

What is jawline slimming (and how does it help bruxism)?

The masseter is one of the strongest muscles in the body — it sits at the angle of the jaw and powers chewing and clenching. When it becomes enlarged, whether through genetics, habitual chewing or persistent grinding, it can widen the lower face and give a square, heavy jawline. Jawline slimming injections use botulinum toxin type A to relax the masseter so it works less forcefully and, over repeated treatments, gradually reduces in bulk — softening the jaw’s contour and revealing a slimmer, more tapered lower face.

The same treatment is one of the most effective options for bruxism — involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching, often during sleep or under stress. Conventional measures such as a night guard protect the teeth from damage but do not address the source: an overactive muscle. By relaxing the masseter, treatment reduces the force of clenching and grinding, which can ease jaw tension, soreness and the associated headaches, and help protect the teeth. Because it is a prescription medicine, it is given only after a consultation and assessment.

Jawline slimming sits within our wider facial sculpting treatments and pairs naturally with the related migraine treatment where tension headaches are also a problem — see the honest limitations below for where another route may suit your concern better.

Concerns it can help

What jawline slimming can help

Jawline slimming addresses both the look of a wide jaw and the discomfort of an overactive chewing muscle.

Honest suitability

Is jawline slimming right for you?

Jawline slimming is not for everyone — and we will tell you if it is not the best option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

Often well suited

  • A wide or square jaw caused by enlarged masseter muscles
  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching (bruxism), especially at night
  • Jaw tension, soreness or associated tension headaches
  • Wanting a softer, more tapered lower-face contour
  • Happy with a result that is maintained and built over several sessions
  • Realistic expectations of a gradual change

May not be suitable

  • A wide lower face due to bone structure rather than muscle
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (not recommended)
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis)
  • Known allergy to botulinum toxin or its ingredients
  • Active infection or skin condition in the treatment area
  • Expecting an immediate, dramatic change in jaw width

The process

How jawline slimming works, step by step

  1. Consultation & assessmentDr Nina or the team assess your jaw, the size and activity of your masseter muscles, your grinding or tension symptoms, medical history and goals, and confirm whether jawline slimming is suitable.
  2. Cleanse & mappingThe skin is cleansed and the masseter is palpated and mapped on each side so the dose is placed accurately and symmetrically.
  3. The injectionsBotulinum toxin is injected into the masseter muscle on both sides using fine needles — most people find this quick and easily tolerated.
  4. Straight back to your dayThe appointment takes only a few minutes and there is minimal downtime — you can usually return to normal activities the same day.
  5. Review & ongoing planTension often eases within days while slimming builds over weeks; repeat sessions every few months maintain and enhance both effects.

“A less-is-more philosophy: a calmer jaw and a softer contour — function and aesthetics treated together.”

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A consultation is required before jawline slimming, because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine. During your initial consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a clinical assessment, the size and activity of your masseter muscles examined, and your aesthetic and functional goals discussed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail — what to expect during and after — and given the opportunity to ask questions.

The consultation covers your medical history, an assessment of your jaw and any grinding, clenching or tension symptoms, your suitability and any contraindications, realistic expected outcomes, alternatives if injections are not ideal, aftercare, and confirmation of your individual plan and price.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

Jawline slimming involves minimal downtime and very little aftercare — most people return to their normal day straight away with very little discomfort. A small bruise, slight redness or mild tenderness at an injection site can occur and usually settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise and vigorous chewing for the rest of the day, and your team will give you tailored aftercare.

Results & longevity: the two effects develop on different timelines. Relief from grinding, clenching and tension is often felt within days, while visible slimming of the jaw develops gradually over the following weeks as the masseter relaxes and reduces in bulk. Results typically last around three to four months. Because the muscle slims with repeated treatment, the aesthetic effect can become more pronounced and longer-lasting over a course; duration varies with the dose, muscle size and your metabolism.

Typical results timeline

Day of treatment

A few injections into the masseters; any tenderness or small bruise usually fades quickly.

First days

Clenching, grinding and jaw tension often begin to ease as the muscle relaxes.

Weeks 2–6

Visible slimming of the jawline develops as masseter bulk gradually reduces.

~3–4 months

Effect gradually wears off; a repeat session maintains and can enhance the slimming.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

Jawline slimming with botulinum toxin is generally well tolerated. Side effects are usually minor and temporary — a small bruise, slight swelling, redness or mild tenderness at the injection site. While the masseter adjusts, some people notice a brief change in chewing sensation or mild jaw fatigue early on, which settles. Uncommonly, slight asymmetry can occur if the muscles respond differently on each side, and is minimised by accurate, balanced placement.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine that should only be given after assessment by a qualified practitioner, and an understanding of the jaw musculature matters here. Dr Nina will discuss less common risks in full at your consultation. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What jawline slimming can and cannot do

  • It cannot slim a wide lower face that is due to bone structure rather than muscle.
  • Aesthetic slimming is gradual and builds over a course — it is not an instant change.
  • It is not permanent — the effect wears off and repeat treatment is needed every few months.
  • It is not suitable in pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain neuromuscular conditions.

Patient review
"I first went to see Dr Nina for Bruxism. Having already faced fillings from the grinding, and wearing a mouth guard every night, I was still regularly getting migraines and ice pick headaches, exacerbated from the daily tension in my jaw. My temples were always tender, and I’d wake up every morning tense and sore. This has been such a life-changing procedure, and now I start the day from a place of much greater relaxation, I’m able to deal with the stress of work and every day life with far more ease, I’m sleeping better, and if I wake in the night, I’m still amazed and grateful to find that my jaw is relaxed. I’m looking forward to trusting Dr. Nina with further treatments! Thanks Dr Nina!"

Dr Nina is an artist! Do not hesitate to book an appointment, you will have an amazing experience. I have been going to Nina for the past 4 years. I have had Botox, fillers, under eye bags removed, most recently had a V Soft Line Thread Lower Face Lift (non surgical procedure). I have never felt any pain with any of my treatments or procedures. Nina is so gentle you don’t feel a thing, always caring, always advises the best solution for your face type and your problem area. Every visit I feel so welcomed, like a real VIP

If I could leave more than five stars I would! Dr Nina’s clinic is warm and welcoming, in a beautiful location close to Knightsbridge station. I had cheek fillers for the first time and my face was numbed prior. I was expecting to find it a little uncomfortable but honestly there was barely any pain at all. The needles are so fine, and Dr Nina was very gentle. I will be back as I know I am in good hands!

I have tried almost so many brands and spent so much, but I have never seen this great results ever before. Dr. Nina has prescribed me a skincare routine after an online consultation. My skin’s improved so much in just 1 month.

Your questions

Jawline slimming & bruxism: your questions answered

What is jawline slimming?

Jawline slimming uses botulinum toxin type A injected into the masseter muscles at the angle of the jaw. By relaxing these powerful chewing muscles, it can soften a wide or square jawline over time and reduce the clenching and grinding of bruxism. It is a prescription medicine given only after consultation.

Does jawline slimming work?

Yes — botulinum toxin relaxes the masseter muscles, reducing their activity and, with repeated treatment, their bulk. This results in a slimmer, more contoured jawline and, for those who grind or clench, less jaw tension. The aesthetic change is gradual and builds over a course of sessions.

How does it treat bruxism and teeth grinding?

Bruxism is driven by an overactive masseter clenching and grinding, often during sleep. Relaxing the muscle with botulinum toxin reduces the force of that activity, which can ease jaw tension, soreness and associated headaches, and help protect the teeth. It works alongside a dental night guard rather than replacing it.

How soon will I notice a difference?

The functional and aesthetic effects develop on different timelines. Relief from clenching, grinding and tension is often felt within a few days, while visible slimming of the jaw develops more gradually over the following weeks as the muscle relaxes and reduces in bulk.

How long does jawline slimming last?

The effect typically lasts around three to four months. Because the masseter gradually reduces in bulk with repeated treatment, the slimming can become more pronounced and longer-lasting over a course, and many people find they can space sessions further apart over time.

How do you reduce the size of the masseter muscle?

The masseter is reduced by injecting botulinum toxin into it, which relaxes the muscle so it works less forcefully. Over repeated treatments, a less-used muscle gradually reduces in bulk — much like any muscle that is exercised less — giving a slimmer jaw contour. The injections are placed by a qualified practitioner after assessment.

Why is my masseter muscle so big?

An enlarged masseter can be due to genetics, habitual or vigorous chewing, or persistent teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism). Whatever the cause, the muscle responds to being used less, which is why relaxing it with botulinum toxin can reduce its size and soften the jawline over time.

Will I still be able to chew normally?

Yes. The dose is judged to relax the masseter enough to soften its action and bulk without preventing normal eating. Some people notice mild jaw fatigue or a slightly different chewing sensation in the first week or two while the muscle adjusts, which settles. Harder, very chewy foods may feel a little more tiring at first.

Does jawline slimming hurt?

Most people find it quick and easily tolerated. Fine needles are used and the injections feel like brief pinpricks; anaesthetic is not usually needed. Any tenderness afterwards is usually mild and short-lived.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal — most people return to their normal day straight away with very little discomfort. A small bruise or mild tenderness at an injection site can occur and settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise and vigorous chewing for the rest of the day.

Is jawline slimming permanent?

No, it is not permanent. The effect typically lasts around three to four months, after which the muscle gradually regains activity and bulk, so repeat treatments are needed to maintain both the slimmer contour and the relief from grinding.

Is jawline slimming safe?

Botulinum toxin has been used safely in medicine for many years and is generally well tolerated. As a prescription medicine, it should only be given after assessment by a qualified practitioner with an understanding of the jaw musculature. Dr Nina will discuss any less common risks at your consultation and will only proceed where it is appropriate for you.

Can jawline slimming help my headaches?

Where headaches are linked to jaw clenching and tension, relaxing the masseter can help reduce them. If you have chronic migraine, that is treated as a separate dedicated migraine treatment, also using botulinum toxin. Dr Nina will assess your symptoms and advise which approach, or combination, is appropriate.

Can it slim a jaw that is wide because of bone?

No. Jawline slimming only reduces width caused by enlarged muscle. If your lower face is wide because of the underlying bone structure, relaxing the masseter will not change that, and Dr Nina will tell you so honestly and discuss whether other options are appropriate.

How much does jawline slimming cost in London?

Jawline slimming and bruxism treatment at Facial Sculpting is from £750 per session. The exact plan, including how many sessions may be helpful, is confirmed at your consultation.

Is a consultation required before treatment?

Yes. Because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine, a consultation and assessment are required to examine your masseter muscles, review any grinding or tension symptoms and your medical history, confirm suitability, discuss realistic outcomes, and agree your individual plan and price.
