The treatment

What is Dermalux LED?

Dermalux LED is a non-invasive medical light therapy that uses light-emitting diodes to energise the skin’s own cells. When skin cells absorb specific wavelengths of light, sluggish cellular processes are given an energy boost, helping the skin to repair, calm and regenerate more efficiently. It is completely pain-free, requires no recovery time, and is suitable for all skin types and tones.

The Dermalux uses three types of clinically researched light — blue to help blemish-prone and congested skin, red to support collagen, radiance and rejuvenation, and near-infrared to calm inflammation and aid recovery — used singly or in combination to target a range of concerns including acne, redness, dullness, fine lines and uneven tone. The effects begin immediately, with skin often looking fresher straight away, while the fuller benefits build over the following weeks, sometimes up to around six weeks. For meaningful change we usually recommend a course of 8–12 sessions, with maintenance as needed.

Dermalux LED works beautifully on its own and as an add-on that supports other treatments — soothing the skin and helping recovery after peels, microneedling or laser. See our skin health treatments for how it fits alongside options such as SkinPen or the Fire & Ice Facial, and the honest limitations below.

Concerns it can help

What does Dermalux LED address?

Dermalux LED is designed to calm, clear and rejuvenate the skin, and to support recovery.

Honest suitability

Is Dermalux LED right for you?

Dermalux LED is gentle and suitable for most people — and we will tell you if it is not the best option for you. Final suitability is confirmed before treatment.

Often well suited

  • Blemish-prone, congested or oily skin
  • Redness, sensitivity or a generally reactive complexion
  • Dull, tired skin wanting a gentle rejuvenating boost
  • Wanting a relaxing, pain-free treatment with no downtime
  • Looking to support and speed recovery after other treatments
  • Happy to follow a course for the best, lasting result

May not be suitable

  • Photosensitivity or use of light-sensitising medication
  • Certain conditions such as epilepsy (light exposure assessed)
  • Active skin infection or a current cold sore outbreak in the area
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (subject to clinic policy)
  • Recent use of certain medications or treatments (timing assessed)
  • Expecting LED alone to lift, tighten or remove deep wrinkles

The process

How Dermalux LED works, step by step

  1. Quick skin checkThe team check your skin and history, confirm Dermalux LED is suitable and decide whether it is best as a stand-alone session or an add-on.
  2. Choosing your lightThe appropriate wavelength — blue, red, near-infrared or a combination — is selected for your skin and concern.
  3. Relax under the lightYou relax with your eyes protected while the Dermalux panel delivers the light; the session is warm, comfortable and pain-free.
  4. Stand-alone or add-onLED can be enjoyed on its own or added straight after a peel, microneedling or laser to calm the skin and support recovery.
  5. Aftercare & your courseYou receive simple aftercare and, where helpful, a course is planned — often 8–12 sessions — with maintenance as needed.

“A less-is-more philosophy: gentle, clinically researched light to calm and rejuvenate the skin — and to help your other treatments work their best.”

The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina Bal

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A quick skin check is recommended before Dermalux LED. The team check your skin, ask about any photosensitivity, medications or conditions, and confirm the treatment is suitable for you. You will be talked through what to expect and given the opportunity to ask questions.

For more significant skin concerns, a fuller consultation with Dr Nina can be arranged to plan a wider skin-health programme — covering your skin type and goals, any contraindications, realistic outcomes, and how Dermalux LED can support a course of other treatments.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

Dermalux LED involves no downtime and is completely pain-free — there is nothing to recover from, and most people find the session warm and relaxing. Skin often looks fresher and feels calmer straight away, and you can return to normal activities, including makeup, immediately. As always, we recommend daily SPF as part of healthy skin care.

Results & longevity: the effects begin immediately, with the fuller benefits revealing themselves over time — sometimes up to around six weeks — as cellular activity improves. Because the results are cumulative, a course of 8–12 sessions usually gives the most noticeable change, with maintenance sessions to sustain it. Outcomes vary with skin type, concern and consistency.

Typical results timeline

Immediately after

Skin often looks fresher and feels calmer; you can return to normal activities straight away.

First weeks

Concerns such as breakouts or redness gradually settle as cellular activity improves.

~6 weeks

Fuller benefits of a course become apparent across radiance, tone and clarity.

Ongoing

Results are cumulative; maintenance sessions help sustain the improvement.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

Dermalux LED is non-invasive, pain-free and one of the gentlest treatments we offer, with no UV and no heat damage. Side effects are uncommon, though very occasionally skin may feel slightly warm or look briefly pink afterwards. It is not suitable for everyone — for example, those with photosensitivity, on light-sensitising medication, or with certain conditions such as epilepsy — which is why a quick check beforehand is important.

Used correctly, LED phototherapy is considered very safe for all skin types and tones. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What Dermalux LED cannot do

  • It calms and rejuvenates skin — it does not lift, tighten or change facial structure.
  • It cannot remove deep static wrinkles or replace peels, microneedling, injectables or laser.
  • Results are cumulative — a single session helps, but a course gives the best change.
  • It is best thought of as a supportive treatment, often most powerful as an add-on.

Patient review
"I recently had a virtual consultation with Dr Nina for my melasma condition. I have been trying many different treatment options over the past year since it has developed and nothing really seemed to work. Dr Nina prescribed a variety of medical grade treatments and only after TEN (this is not at all an exaggeration) days the melasma on my cheeks has significantly reduced to the point that my friend said she couldn’t even see it. Not only has this experience improved my skin’s condition, but it has helped my mental health and confidence dramatically. Dr Nina is extremely personable, charming and I felt that she really understood my concerns. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her and I would 100% go back for other treatments, as she has gained my full trust."

Dottor Nina super star! The clinic is beautiful, it makes you feel safe doing any procedure. I had my lips done twice in other places and I was in pain and also my lips looked too big, duck lips. Dottor Nina made my lips look beautiful and natural, she adviced not to go too much, so we did only 0.5ml. I did not feel pain during the procedure and my lips have only small bruises. The nurse also was very nice, she took care of my baby. I would definitely recommend dottor Nina. Price wise is a bit higher than the average but worth it. I will definitely go back. Maria

I visited Dr Nina Bal recently for lip fillers, the surgery located in Belgravia was so beautiful and very high end! The surgery itself was very covid aware with plenty of sanitiser stations and every employee was wearing a mask and gloves. Dr Nina made me feel very comfortable and the procedure was quick and easy. She had a lovely energy and really cared for me as a patient, which made the experience so much more positive. Thanks again for my lovely lip fillers, they’re so natural and much more voluminous than before. Super happy, couldn’t recommend Dr Nina Bal more

Your questions

Dermalux LED FAQs

What is Dermalux LED phototherapy?

Dermalux LED is a non-invasive light therapy that uses light-emitting diodes — in red, blue and near-infrared wavelengths — to energise the skin’s own cells. This helps the skin repair, calm and rejuvenate more efficiently, targeting concerns such as acne, redness, dullness and fine lines. It is pain-free and suitable for all skin types.

How much does Dermalux LED cost in London?

Dermalux LED at Facial Sculpting is from £85 per session, which makes it excellent value as a stand-alone treatment or as an add-on to another treatment such as a facial or microneedling. For meaningful change, a course of 8–12 sessions is usually recommended; your plan is confirmed at your appointment.

What does each light colour do?

Blue light helps blemish-prone and congested skin, red light supports collagen, radiance and rejuvenation, and near-infrared light calms inflammation and aids recovery. The wavelengths can be used singly or combined, and the right choice is selected for your skin and concern on the day.

Is Dermalux LED safe?

Yes — Dermalux LED is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that uses no UV and no heat damage, and is considered very safe for all skin types and tones. It is not suitable for everyone, however; those with photosensitivity, on light-sensitising medication, or with certain conditions such as epilepsy should mention this so suitability can be checked.

Is there any downtime after Dermalux LED?

There is no downtime at all. The treatment is completely non-invasive and pain-free, so you can return to normal activities — including makeup — straight away. Skin often looks fresher and feels calmer immediately, and we recommend daily SPF as part of healthy skin care.

How many Dermalux sessions will I need?

Because results are cumulative, a course of 8–12 sessions is usually recommended for the most noticeable change, with maintenance sessions afterwards as needed. As an add-on to other treatments, even a single session can help calm the skin and support recovery. The team will suggest a sensible plan for your skin.

Can Dermalux LED be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely — this is one of its strengths. Dermalux LED can be used as a stand-alone therapy or added straight after treatments such as the Fire & Ice Facial, peels, SkinPen microneedling or laser to soothe the skin, reduce redness and help speed recovery. The team will advise how best to combine it.

Does Dermalux LED help with acne?

Yes. The blue wavelength is used to help blemish-prone and congested skin, often combined with near-infrared to calm inflammation, as part of a broader skin-health plan. A course gives the best results, and Dr Nina may recommend pairing LED with other treatments and good home care to manage acne-prone skin.

Does Dermalux LED hurt?

No — it is completely pain-free. You simply relax under the light panel with your eyes protected; the session is warm and comfortable, and there is no needling, heat damage or recovery. Many people find it deeply relaxing.

How soon will I see results and how long do they last?

The effects begin immediately, with skin often looking fresher straight away, while the fuller benefits build over the following weeks — sometimes up to around six weeks. Because results are cumulative, a course gives the most noticeable improvement, and maintenance sessions help sustain it. Individual results vary.

Is Dermalux LED suitable for sensitive or reactive skin?

Yes — it is one of the gentlest treatments available and is often used specifically to calm redness, sensitivity and reactive skin. There is no abrasion or heat damage. A quick skin check beforehand confirms it is suitable for you and rules out photosensitivity or relevant medications.

Can I have Dermalux LED on a lunch break?

Yes — sessions are quick, relaxing and have no downtime, so Dermalux LED fits easily into a busy day. You can return to work and apply makeup straight away. It is a popular, low-commitment way to support skin health between more intensive treatments.

Is Dermalux LED worth it as an add-on?

Many patients find it is — adding LED after a peel, microneedling or laser can soothe the skin, reduce redness and support recovery, helping your main treatment show at its best. At £85 per session it is an affordable, gentle boost. Dr Nina and the team will advise when it genuinely adds value.

Do I need a consultation before Dermalux LED?

A quick skin check beforehand is recommended to confirm the treatment is suitable and to rule out photosensitivity, light-sensitising medication or relevant conditions. For more significant skin concerns, a fuller consultation with Dr Nina can be arranged to plan a wider programme and decide how LED supports it.
