Treatment summary
Nose-to-mouth line filler at a glance
Nose-to-mouth lines, or nasolabial folds, run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth and deepen as the midface loses volume and the skin loosens with age. Cross-linked hyaluronic-acid (HA) filler can soften these folds and restore support — though the most natural results often come from treating the cause higher up in the cheek. The treatment is reversible with hyalase. Results vary from person to person.
- What it treats
- Deepening nose-to-mouth folds, a tired or “sad” midface, loss of cheek support
- How it works
- HA filler softens the fold directly and/or restores cheek volume that supports it
- Areas
- The nasolabial fold and the supporting midface above it
- Anaesthetic
- Topical numbing if needed; most fillers contain local anaesthetic
- Sessions
- Often one session per area; a top-up may refine the result
- Downtime
- Minimal; swelling and the odd bruise can occur
- Results & longevity
- Immediate; settle by ~2 weeks; typically last ~6–12 months
- Reversible
- Yes — HA filler can be dissolved with hyalase

Understanding the concern
What are nose-to-mouth lines?
Nose-to-mouth lines (also known as nasolabial folds) run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They deepen with age because the fat pads of the cheek descend and flatten, the skin loosens, and volume is lost from the midface — so the cheek begins to “fold” over the line. Sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle can make them more noticeable, and at their deepest they can give the face a tired, sad or sagging look.
Cross-linked hyaluronic-acid (HA) filler can soften these folds, either by placing a small amount of filler directly along the crease to lift and smooth it, or — often more naturally — by restoring volume to the cheek above so the fold is supported from where it actually came from. Dr Nina’s philosophy is less is more: the goal is to soften and refresh, not to erase every line or over-fill the area, which can look heavy. In some cases skin-tightening or skin-quality treatments are advised first or instead.
Because nasolabial folds are usually a midface issue, this treatment is closely related to cheek fillers and the lower-mouth marionette lines. Skin quality can be supported with Profhilo®, and laxity with Endolift®. See the honest limitations below.
What it can help
What nose-to-mouth line filler can address
This treatment is designed to soften the nose-to-mouth folds and restore midface support.
Honest suitability
Is nose-to-mouth line filler right for you?
Filler for the nose-to-mouth lines is not for everyone — and we will tell you if it is not the best option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.
Often well suited
- Moderately deep nasolabial folds you would like softened
- Loss of midface volume that is letting the cheek fold
- Wanting a fresher, less tired look without surgery
- Open to treating the cheek to support the fold naturally
- Realistic expectations that lines are softened, not erased
- Happy for a top-up to fine-tune if needed
May not be suitable
- Very deep folds driven mainly by significant skin laxity (tightening may suit better)
- Active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (subject to clinic policy)
- A history of severe allergy or certain autoimmune conditions
- Expecting filler alone to remove the fold completely
- Body-image concerns that filler is unlikely to resolve
The process
How nose-to-mouth line filler works, step by step
- Consultation & assessmentDr Nina or the team assess your midface and folds, review your medical history and goals, and advise whether to treat the fold directly, the cheek above it, or both.
- Plan the approachThe cause of your folds is assessed; injection points are planned to soften the line and, where helpful, restore the cheek support behind it.
- ComfortThe skin is cleansed and topical numbing can be applied; most HA fillers also contain local anaesthetic for comfort.
- Precise placementHA filler is placed with a needle or cannula and gently moulded to soften the fold and rebalance the midface.
- Review & aftercareYou see an immediate change, receive aftercare advice, and the settled result is best judged at around two weeks, with a top-up only if needed.
“A less-is-more philosophy: we soften the nose-to-mouth lines and support the cheek — for a refreshed look, never an over-filled one.”
The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina BalBefore treatment
What happens at your consultation
A consultation is recommended before treating the nose-to-mouth lines. During your initial consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a midface assessment, your medical history reviewed and your suitability confirmed. You will be talked through the approach in detail — whether to treat the fold, the cheek, or combine treatments — and given the opportunity to ask questions.
The consultation covers your goals, an assessment of what is causing your folds, realistic expected outcomes, alternatives if filler is not ideal (such as skin tightening or skin boosters first), the possibility of dissolving with hyalase, aftercare, and confirmation of your individual plan and price.
Results & recovery
What to expect afterwards
Treating the nose-to-mouth lines involves minimal downtime, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. Swelling is common in the first day or two and a little bruising or tenderness is possible; bruising usually fades within one to two weeks as the filler integrates. Your team provides tailored aftercare advice.
Results & longevity: the folds look softer immediately, with the final result best judged once any swelling settles at around two weeks. HA filler in this area is not permanent and typically lasts around 6–12 months, after which a top-up maintains the result. Where skin-tightening treatments such as Endolift® or Focus Dual are used to address laxity, those work over a longer timescale. Duration varies with the product used, your metabolism and lifestyle.
Typical results timeline
Folds appear softer immediately; some swelling is normal and expected.
Any swelling and bruising settle; the result begins to look natural.
Filler has integrated; this is the point to judge the final result.
The softening gradually fades; a top-up refreshes and maintains it.
Safety
Possible risks & side effects
As with any dermal filler, treating the nasolabial folds carries some risks. Common, temporary effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and small lumps that usually settle as the filler integrates. Less common risks — such as infection, asymmetry, or a heavy or over-filled look — are reduced by conservative technique and discussed individually at consultation.
The nasolabial region contains important blood vessels, so a rare but serious risk of any facial filler is accidental injection into a vessel (vascular occlusion). This is why a medically trained injector with sound anatomical knowledge and a clinic that stocks hyalase matter. HA filler is reversible and can be dissolved if you are unhappy or in the event of a complication. If anything is unexpected after treatment, contact the clinic for advice.
Honest limitations
What filler can and cannot do for nose-to-mouth lines
- Filler softens the folds — it rarely erases deep lines completely.
- It cannot tighten significantly loose skin that is driving the fold.
- Over-filling the line directly can look heavy — treating the cheek is often more natural.
- It is temporary — maintenance is needed to keep the result.
Compare your options
Nose-to-mouth line filler vs other approaches
A simple, honest comparison to help you and Dr Nina choose the right route for the nose-to-mouth area.
| Approach | Best for | Invasiveness | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nasolabial filler (HA) | Softening the fold directly | Minimally invasive injectable | Minimal |
| Cheek filler (HA) | Restoring midface volume that supports the fold | Minimally invasive injectable | Minimal |
| Profhilo® | Skin quality, hydration & firmness around the area | Non-surgical injectable | Minimal |
| Endolift® | Tightening early-to-moderate lower-face laxity | Minimally invasive laser | Minimal |
| EMFACE® | Tone and a subtle lift without needles | Non-invasive RF + electromagnetic | None |
The most natural correction often comes from supporting the fold with cheek filler rather than filling the line alone, with skin quality supported by Profhilo®. The right plan is discussed honestly at consultation.

What our patients say about Facial Sculpting Clinic
Real reviews from patients who chose Dr Nina Bal and the Facial Sculpting team.
I visited Dr Nina Bal recently for lip fillers, the surgery located in Belgravia was so beautiful and very high end! The surgery itself was very covid aware with plenty of sanitiser stations and every employee was wearing a mask and gloves. Dr Nina made me feel very comfortable and the procedure was quick and easy. She had a lovely energy and really cared for me as a patient, which made the experience so much more positive. Thanks again for my lovely lip fillers, they’re so natural and much more voluminous than before. Super happy, couldn’t recommend Dr Nina Bal more
Dottor Nina super star! The clinic is beautiful, it makes you feel safe doing any procedure. I had my lips done twice in other places and I was in pain and also my lips looked too big, duck lips. Dottor Nina made my lips look beautiful and natural, she adviced not to go too much, so we did only 0.5ml. I did not feel pain during the procedure and my lips have only small bruises. The nurse also was very nice, she took care of my baby. I would definitely recommend dottor Nina. Price wise is a bit higher than the average but worth it. I will definitely go back. Maria
Fantastic service and beautiful results! I had dermal fillers in both the lips and chin, Nina thoroughly understood the results that i was looking for and executed this perfectly. Would highly recommend!
I have been seeing Dr Nina now for a couple of years and there is nobody else I would trust with my face. I initially saw someone else and had no effect with the anti wrinkle treatments and was told they didn’t work for me. I was really conscious of a deep forehead wrinkle that I had. I then tried Dr Nina and it disappeared after the first treatment. Have been coming back since, always such a pleasant experience.
Excellent and so happy with my results! Can’t wait to go back
Your questions
Nose-to-mouth lines: your questions answered
What are nose-to-mouth lines?
Nose-to-mouth lines, medically called nasolabial folds, are the creases that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They deepen with age as the cheek fat descends and flattens, the skin loosens and the midface loses volume, which can give the face a tired or sad appearance.
Why do I have a line from my nose to my mouth?
These lines appear due to the natural ageing process — loss of skin elasticity, gravity and volume loss in the midface — which lets the cheek fold over the crease. Sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle factors can make them more prominent. Some degree of nasolabial fold is normal at any age.
How much does nose-to-mouth line filler cost in London?
Treatment at Facial Sculpting starts from £635 for 1ml of hyaluronic-acid filler. The amount of product and the best approach depend on your anatomy, which is assessed at consultation, where your individual plan and price are confirmed.
What is the best filler for nose-to-mouth lines?
Many practitioners consider cross-linked hyaluronic-acid filler the most suitable option, because it is reversible and can be placed precisely. Often the most natural result comes from supporting the fold with cheek filler rather than filling the line alone, and from tightening the skin first where there is laxity. Dr Nina will advise the best approach for you.
Can filler completely get rid of nasolabial folds?
Filler softens the folds and refreshes the area, but it rarely erases deep lines completely, and trying to do so by over-filling the crease can look heavy. A natural softening, often by restoring cheek volume, is the realistic and more flattering goal. Some folds are also better addressed with skin tightening.
Does filler for nose-to-mouth lines hurt?
Most patients find it very tolerable. The skin can be numbed with a topical anaesthetic, and most HA fillers also contain local anaesthetic, so you typically feel a small scratch and some pressure. Using a cannula in this area can further reduce discomfort and bruising.
How long do nose-to-mouth fillers last?
Hyaluronic-acid filler in this area typically lasts around 6 to 12 months. Longevity varies with the product used, the area treated, your metabolism and lifestyle. A top-up maintains the softening over time.
Will treating my nose-to-mouth lines look natural?
It should. Dr Nina works to a less-is-more philosophy and often softens the fold by restoring the cheek above it, so the result looks like a refreshed, supported midface rather than a filled line. Normal expressions including smiling are unaffected.
Can the filler be dissolved?
Yes. Because we use hyaluronic-acid filler, it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase (hyalase). This makes the treatment reversible, which is reassuring if you change your mind, want an adjustment, or in the rare event of a complication. See our hyalase page for more.
Can I smile after nasolabial fold fillers?
Yes. The treatment smooths the lines while leaving your natural movement intact, so smiling and other expressions are unaffected. We do advise gentle care of the area and avoiding makeup for the first day while it settles.
Should I treat the cheek or the fold itself?
It depends on the cause. If your folds are driven by lost cheek volume, restoring the cheek often softens the line more naturally than filling the crease. If the fold itself is the main issue, a small amount placed along it can help. Dr Nina assesses this at consultation and may combine both.
Is filler the only way to treat nose-to-mouth lines?
No. Where skin laxity is the main driver, skin-tightening treatments such as Endolift® or Focus Dual may be recommended first or instead, and skin-quality treatments like Profhilo® can help overall. Filler is one tool among several, and the right combination is discussed at consultation.
Is filler for nasolabial folds safe?
Hyaluronic-acid filler has a long track record when performed by a trained medical injector. The nasolabial region contains important vessels, so sound anatomical knowledge, careful technique and a clinic that stocks hyalase are key to safety. Common effects such as swelling and bruising are temporary; risks are discussed in full at consultation.
Is a consultation required first?
A consultation is recommended to assess what is causing your folds, review your medical history, advise whether to treat the fold, the cheek or both, discuss realistic outcomes and reversibility, and confirm your individual plan and price before any treatment.
