Treatment summary

Treating Bell’s palsy at a glance

Bell’s palsy is a temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face, caused by a problem with the facial nerve. Most cases recover, but some people are left with lasting asymmetry, tightness or unwanted movement. In chronic Bell’s palsy, precisely targeted botulinum toxin may help rebalance the face and improve symmetry — often by gently relaxing the stronger, unaffected side or easing over-active muscles. This is a bespoke medical treatment, planned individually, and it does not cure the underlying nerve condition.

Understanding the condition

What is Bell’s palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a sudden, usually temporary weakness or paralysis affecting the muscles on one side of the face, caused by inflammation or compression of the facial nerve. Its primary signs are drooping of one side of the face and the mouth, and many people are unable to fully close or blink the eye on the affected side. The majority of people recover well, often within weeks to months — but a proportion are left with persistent (chronic) effects such as facial asymmetry, muscle tightness, or unwanted linked movements (synkinesis).

For chronic Bell’s palsy, botulinum toxin type A can be used as part of care to help restore facial symmetry and comfort. Rather than trying to power up the weakened side, treatment often works by gently relaxing the stronger, unaffected side so the two halves of the face are better balanced at rest and in expression, and by easing over-active or tight muscles and unwanted movements on the affected side. The goal is improved symmetry and facial comfort — not a cure for the nerve condition, and not a guaranteed outcome.

Because every face and every recovery is different, this is a bespoke treatment available on assessment only — the muscles treated, the doses and the plan are individual to you. It is one of several medical and aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin at the clinic; where appropriate it may form part of wider care alongside other specialists, and we will advise honestly on what botulinum toxin can and cannot achieve.

What it can help

What Bell’s palsy treatment can help

Targeted botulinum toxin may help improve symmetry and comfort in chronic Bell’s palsy, on assessment only.

Honest suitability

Is Bell’s palsy treatment right for you?

This is a bespoke medical treatment that is not appropriate for everyone, and a detailed assessment comes first — we will tell you honestly if it is not the right option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

Often well suited

  • Persistent (chronic) facial asymmetry following Bell’s palsy
  • Tightness or over-activity of muscles on the affected side
  • Unwanted linked movements (synkinesis) after recovery
  • A stronger, unaffected side that overpowers expression at rest
  • Looking to improve facial balance and comfort, not a cure
  • Realistic expectations of a tailored, gradual improvement

May not be suitable

  • Recent or actively recovering Bell’s palsy (often best given time first)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (not recommended)
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis)
  • Known allergy to botulinum toxin or its ingredients
  • Facial weakness not yet medically diagnosed or investigated
  • Expecting restored nerve function or a guaranteed result

The treatment

How treatment works, step by step

  1. Detailed assessmentDr Nina or the team take a full history, examine your facial movement, symmetry and any tightness or unwanted movement at rest and in expression, and confirm whether botulinum toxin is appropriate for you.
  2. Bespoke planningA personalised map of which muscles to treat — and at what doses — is created for your individual pattern, often focusing on rebalancing the stronger side.
  3. Comfort measuresTopical anaesthetic can be used on sensitive facial areas to keep treatment comfortable.
  4. The injectionsSmall, precise injections of botulinum toxin are placed into the selected muscles using very fine needles — the appointment is usually brief.
  5. Review & refinementThe effect develops over up to two weeks; a review lets us assess symmetry and refine the plan, with treatment repeated as needed.

“A bespoke, medical approach: botulinum toxin used thoughtfully to help rebalance the face after Bell’s palsy — honest about what it can and cannot do.”

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A consultation and detailed assessment are required before treatment, because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and chronic Bell’s palsy needs individual evaluation. During your consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a clinical assessment, your facial movement and symmetry reviewed, and your suitability confirmed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail — what to expect during and after — and given the opportunity to ask questions.

The consultation covers your medical history and the course of your Bell’s palsy, an assessment of your facial muscles, symmetry and any synkinesis, your suitability and any contraindications, realistic expected outcomes (improved symmetry and comfort rather than a cure), aftercare, and confirmation of your individual, bespoke plan and its cost.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

Treatment involves minimal downtime — most people return to normal activities the same day. Mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites can occur and usually settles quickly. We provide tailored aftercare advice, and because this is a bespoke treatment we pay close attention to how your face responds so the plan can be refined.

Results & longevity: the effect is not immediate. Reduced muscle action is often noticeable within about five days, with the effect settling by around two weeks, when improved balance and symmetry typically become apparent. Results usually last a few months before gradually wearing off, after which treatment can be repeated. The degree of benefit varies from person to person, and treatment manages the asymmetry rather than restoring nerve function.

Typical results timeline

Day of treatment

Small, precise injections; any redness or minor bruising usually settles quickly.

~5 days

Reduced muscle action often becomes noticeable as targeted muscles relax.

~2 weeks

The effect settles; improved symmetry is assessed and the plan refined if needed.

A few months

The effect gradually wears off; treatment can be repeated as part of ongoing care.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

Botulinum toxin in chronic Bell’s palsy is generally well tolerated when planned and placed carefully. Side effects are usually minor and temporary — mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites. Because the aim is to fine-tune the balance between facial muscles, there is a possibility of temporary over- or under-correction or a brief change in expression near a treated muscle; this settles as the effect wears off and is why a conservative, individually mapped, review-led approach is used.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine that should only be given after a detailed assessment by a qualified practitioner, and facial weakness should be medically diagnosed and investigated first. Dr Nina will discuss less common risks in full at your consultation and is honest about the limits of treatment. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What treatment can and cannot do

  • It may improve symmetry and comfort but does not cure Bell’s palsy or restore nerve function.
  • It cannot strengthen or “reactivate” a weakened, paralysed side of the face.
  • The effect is temporary and treatment usually needs repeating every few months.
  • Results are individual and not guaranteed — and it is best suited to chronic, settled cases.

Transparent pricing

How much does Bell’s palsy treatment cost?

Because every face and every recovery is different, Bell’s palsy treatment is bespoke and costed individually after a detailed assessment.

Your questions

Bell’s palsy treatment: your questions answered

What is Bell’s palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a sudden, usually temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face, caused by a problem with the facial nerve. Common signs are drooping of one side of the face and mouth and difficulty closing or blinking the eye on that side. Most people recover, but some are left with lasting effects.

How can botulinum toxin help in Bell’s palsy?

In chronic Bell’s palsy, targeted botulinum toxin may help restore facial symmetry — often by gently relaxing the stronger, unaffected side so the two halves of the face are better balanced, and by easing over-active or tight muscles and unwanted movements on the affected side. The aim is improved balance and comfort, not a cure.

Is this a cure for Bell’s palsy?

No. Botulinum toxin does not cure Bell’s palsy or restore facial-nerve function. It is used to manage the lasting effects — particularly asymmetry, tightness and unwanted movements — to improve facial balance and comfort. Dr Nina is honest about what treatment can and cannot achieve at your assessment.

Why treat the unaffected side?

After Bell’s palsy, the unaffected side can appear to overpower the weaker side, making asymmetry more obvious at rest and in expression. Gently relaxing selected muscles on the stronger side can bring the two halves of the face into better balance. The exact approach is individual and decided at your assessment.

What is synkinesis, and can it be treated?

Synkinesis is unwanted linked movement that can develop after Bell’s palsy — for example the eye narrowing when you smile — because nerve fibres reconnect imperfectly during recovery. Carefully placed botulinum toxin can help ease the over-active muscles involved, which may reduce these unwanted movements. This is assessed and planned individually.

When is the right time to have treatment?

This treatment is intended for chronic, settled Bell’s palsy rather than the early, recovering phase, which is often best given time first. The right timing is individual and is decided at your assessment, taking into account how your recovery has progressed and any specialist advice you have received.

How soon will I see a difference?

The effect is not immediate. Reduced muscle action is often noticeable within about five days, with the effect settling by around two weeks, when improved symmetry typically becomes apparent. A review at this point lets Dr Nina assess the balance and refine the plan if needed.

How long does the effect last?

Results usually last a few months before gradually wearing off, after which treatment can be repeated as part of ongoing care. The exact duration varies from person to person, depending on the muscles treated, the doses used and individual factors.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most people tolerate it well. Very fine needles are used and the injections feel like brief pinpricks. Topical anaesthetic can be applied to sensitive facial areas for added comfort, and the appointment is usually brief.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal — most people return to normal activities the same day. Mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites can occur and settles quickly. We provide tailored aftercare advice.

Is the treatment safe?

Botulinum toxin has been used in medicine for many years and is generally well tolerated when planned and placed carefully. As a prescription medicine, it should only be given after a detailed assessment by a qualified practitioner, and facial weakness should be medically diagnosed first. Dr Nina will discuss any less common risks at your consultation.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are usually minor and temporary: mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites. Because the aim is to fine-tune balance between muscles, temporary over- or under-correction or a brief change in expression near a treated muscle is possible, and settles as the effect wears off. A conservative, review-led approach minimises this.

Can it be combined with other care?

Yes. Treatment is often one part of wider care for chronic Bell’s palsy, which may include facial physiotherapy and the input of other specialists. Where appropriate, Dr Nina will work alongside your existing care and advise on what is suitable, referring on where wider input is needed.

Why is the price bespoke rather than fixed?

Because every face and every recovery after Bell’s palsy is different, the muscles treated, the doses and the plan are individual to you — so a single list price would not be meaningful. The exact cost is confirmed in writing after your detailed assessment, with no obligation to proceed. A consultation is from £200.

Is a consultation required before treatment?

Yes. Because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and chronic Bell’s palsy needs individual evaluation, a consultation and detailed assessment are required to examine your facial movement and symmetry, review your history, confirm suitability, set realistic expectations, and agree your bespoke plan and its cost.
