Hyperhidrosis Treatment

A minimally invasive injectable treatment in which botulinum toxin is used to temporarily reduce excessive sweating — most commonly of the underarms — by blocking the nerve signals that switch on the sweat glands. Carried out at Facial Sculpting, Dr Nina Bal’s doctor-led South Kensington clinic, following a medical assessment, it may help reduce the impact of hyperhidrosis on daily life.

Treatment summary

Treatment for excessive sweating at a glance

Hyperhidrosis is a condition of excessive sweating that goes well beyond what the body needs to cool itself, and can be distressing day to day. Botulinum toxin injections work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands in the treated area, which may help reduce sweating — most reliably in the underarms. It does not cure the underlying tendency, and is used only after a medical assessment to confirm it is appropriate.

What it may help

Understanding the condition

What is hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)?

Sweating is the body’s normal way of cooling itself when we are hot, active, anxious or stressed. In hyperhidrosis, sweating far exceeds what is needed for temperature control and can occur unpredictably — soaking clothing, affecting grip and causing real day-to-day and social distress. It may be primary (no underlying medical cause, often affecting specific areas such as the underarms, hands or feet) or secondary to another condition or medication, which is one reason a medical assessment comes first.

Botulinum toxin type A offers an effective option for excessive sweating in a treated area. A series of small, shallow injections is placed across the skin of the area — most commonly the underarms — where the toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals that activate the sweat glands. With those signals interrupted, local sweating is markedly reduced for several months. It is important to understand that this manages the symptom rather than curing the underlying tendency, and that the effect wears off and needs repeating.

Hyperhidrosis treatment is one of several medical and aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin offered at the clinic, alongside our migraine treatment — see the honest limitations below, and note that where excess sweating may be secondary to another condition, we will advise the appropriate medical pathway.

What it can help

What excessive-sweating treatment can help

Botulinum toxin may help reduce excessive sweating in a treated area after a medical assessment.

Honest suitability

Is treatment for excessive sweating right for you?

Treatment is not appropriate for everyone, and a medical assessment comes first — we will tell you if it is not the right option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

Often well suited

  • Excessive underarm sweating that troubles you day to day
  • Sweating not adequately controlled by strong antiperspirants
  • Primary focal hyperhidrosis confirmed at assessment
  • Wanting a longer-lasting option than topical treatments
  • Able to attend a follow-up to check and top up any missed areas
  • Realistic expectations of symptom reduction, not a permanent cure

May not be suitable

  • Sweating that may be secondary to another medical condition or medication
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (not recommended)
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis)
  • Known allergy to botulinum toxin or its ingredients
  • Active infection or skin condition in the treatment area
  • Expecting a permanent cure of the underlying tendency

The treatment

How treatment for excessive sweating works, step by step

  1. Medical assessmentDr Nina or the team take a full history, assess the pattern and severity of your sweating, consider whether it may be secondary to another cause, and confirm whether botulinum toxin is appropriate.
  2. Mapping the areaThe affected area is examined and the injection points are mapped across the skin; a starch-iodine test is sometimes used to define the sweatiest zones.
  3. Comfort measuresTopical anaesthetic or cooling can be used, particularly for more sensitive areas such as the hands or feet, to keep treatment comfortable.
  4. The injectionsA series of small, shallow injections is placed evenly across the treated area using very fine needles — the appointment is usually brief.
  5. Follow-up reviewA review at around two weeks lets us check the result and top up any missed spots so you get the full benefit; repeat treatment is planned as the effect wears off.

“A medical, assessment-first approach: botulinum toxin used carefully to ease excessive sweating — symptom relief, honestly explained.”

The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina Bal

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A consultation and medical assessment are required before treatment, because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and excessive sweating sometimes has an underlying cause. During your consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a clinical assessment, the pattern and severity of your sweating reviewed, and your suitability confirmed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail — what to expect during and after — and given the opportunity to ask questions.

The consultation covers your medical history, an assessment of the affected areas, whether sweating may be secondary to another condition, your suitability and any contraindications, realistic expected outcomes (symptom reduction rather than cure), aftercare and follow-up, and confirmation of your individual plan and price.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

Treatment involves minimal downtime — most people return to work straight after their injections. Mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites can occur and usually settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise, saunas and the application of antiperspirant to the treated area for the rest of the day, and your team will give you tailored aftercare.

Results & longevity: the effect is not immediate. A reduction in sweating is often noticeable from around five days, with the fuller effect by about two weeks; we recommend a follow-up at two weeks so any missed spots can be topped up. The benefit often lasts around four to six months as the nerves gradually recover, after which treatment can be repeated. Onset and duration vary from person to person, and some people find they can go longer between treatments over time.

~4–6 months

Sweating gradually returns as nerves recover; treatment can be repeated.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis is generally well tolerated. Side effects are usually minor and temporary — mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites. When the hands are treated, a temporary, mild weakness of grip can occasionally occur because of nearby small muscles; this is uncommon, settles as the effect wears off, and is part of why area selection and technique matter. Some people notice a small, temporary increase in sweating elsewhere as the body compensates.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine that should only be given after a medical assessment by a qualified practitioner, particularly because excessive sweating can sometimes be secondary to another condition. Dr Nina will discuss less common risks in full at your consultation. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What treatment can and cannot do

  • It manages the symptom — it does not cure the underlying tendency to sweat.
  • The effect is temporary and treatment must be repeated, usually a few times a year.
  • Results are most reliable in the underarms; hands, feet and face vary and can be more sensitive.
  • It is not appropriate where sweating may be secondary to another condition without addressing that first.

I had EndoLift with Dr Nina at her clinic. I just wanted to share my experience With anyone who is looking to get endo lift or any other procedure done with Dr Nina. She is absolutely amazing so gentle and so kind she is so experienced in her field and knows whats best for you without trying to oversell you rather only whats needed. I was looking for this treatment for my double chin and picked the best place for it! it was a very comfortable treatment took about 30 mins. It permanently dissolves the fat there and tightens the area. She always checked on me to make sure im feeling ok. Its a week now and i can slowly see a difference im a little swollen and sore but the swelling is not noticeable to anyone. Cant wait for full results. Thank you Dr Nina.

I recently had a virtual consultation with Dr Nina for my melasma condition. I have been trying many different treatment options over the past year since it has developed and nothing really seemed to work. Dr Nina prescribed a variety of medical grade treatments and only after TEN (this is not at all an exaggeration) days the melasma on my cheeks has significantly reduced to the point that my friend said she couldn’t even see it. Not only has this experience improved my skin’s condition, but it has helped my mental health and confidence dramatically. Dr Nina is extremely personable, charming and I felt that she really understood my concerns. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her and I would 100% go back for other treatments, as she has gained my full trust.

I visited Dr Nina Bal recently for lip fillers, the surgery located in Belgravia was so beautiful and very high end! The surgery itself was very covid aware with plenty of sanitiser stations and every employee was wearing a mask and gloves. Dr Nina made me feel very comfortable and the procedure was quick and easy. She had a lovely energy and really cared for me as a patient, which made the experience so much more positive. Thanks again for my lovely lip fillers, they’re so natural and much more voluminous than before. Super happy, couldn’t recommend Dr Nina Bal more

Your questions

Hyperhidrosis treatment: your questions answered

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that goes well beyond what the body needs to cool itself. It can affect specific areas such as the underarms, hands, feet or face (primary hyperhidrosis) or be related to another medical condition or medication (secondary hyperhidrosis). It can be distressing day to day, which is why effective treatments are sought.

How do botulinum toxin injections help excessive sweating?

A series of small, shallow injections places botulinum toxin into the skin of the affected area, where it temporarily blocks the nerve signals that switch on the sweat glands. With those signals interrupted, sweating in the treated area is markedly reduced for several months. It treats the symptom rather than curing the underlying tendency.

Which areas can be treated?

The underarms are the most commonly treated area and tend to respond most reliably. Botulinum toxin may also be used for excessive sweating of the hands, feet or face, though these areas can be more sensitive and results vary. The appropriate area and approach are confirmed at your assessment.

Is it a cure for hyperhidrosis?

No. Treatment may significantly reduce sweating in the treated area for several months, but it does not cure the underlying tendency to sweat, which returns as the effect wears off. It is best thought of as effective, repeatable symptom relief rather than a permanent solution.

How soon does it work?

A reduction in sweating is often noticeable from around five days, with the fuller effect by about two weeks. We recommend a follow-up at two weeks so we can check the result and top up any missed spots to ensure you get the full benefit.

How long does it last?

The benefit often lasts around four to six months as the treated nerves gradually recover, after which treatment can be repeated. Duration varies from person to person, and some people find they can go a little longer between treatments over time.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most people tolerate it well, and very fine needles are used. The underarms are generally comfortable; more sensitive areas such as the hands or feet may benefit from topical anaesthetic or cooling, which we can use to keep treatment comfortable.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal — most people return to work straight after treatment. Mild redness or small bruising at the injection sites can occur and settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise, saunas and applying antiperspirant to the area for the rest of the day.

Is the treatment safe?

Botulinum toxin has been used safely in medicine for many years and is generally well tolerated for hyperhidrosis. As a prescription medicine, it should only be given after a medical assessment by a qualified practitioner — particularly because excessive sweating can sometimes be secondary to another condition. Dr Nina will discuss any less common risks at your consultation.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are usually minor and temporary: mild redness, small bruising or tenderness at the injection sites. When the hands are treated, a temporary, mild weakness of grip can occasionally occur and settles as the effect wears off. Some people notice a small, temporary increase in sweating elsewhere.

Will I sweat more somewhere else?

Occasionally people notice a small, temporary increase in sweating in another area as the body compensates. This is usually minor. If it troubles you, mention it at your follow-up so Dr Nina can advise on the best approach for you.

What is the difference between primary and secondary hyperhidrosis?

Primary hyperhidrosis has no underlying medical cause and often affects specific areas such as the underarms, hands or feet. Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by another condition or medication. Distinguishing the two matters, because secondary sweating may need that underlying cause addressed — which is part of the assessment.

Will it stop me from cooling down or being unhealthy?

Treatment reduces sweating only in the specific area injected, leaving the rest of your body to regulate temperature normally. Treating a focal area such as the underarms does not impair your overall ability to cool down. Dr Nina will explain this in the context of your individual treatment.

How much does hyperhidrosis treatment cost in London?

Hyperhidrosis treatment at Facial Sculpting is from £760 per session. The exact plan, including which area is treated and follow-up, is confirmed after your medical assessment.

Is a consultation required before treatment?

Yes. Because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and excessive sweating can sometimes have an underlying cause, a consultation and medical assessment are required to review your history and the pattern of your sweating, confirm suitability, discuss realistic outcomes, and agree your plan and price.
