Glamour put the question most patients arrive with to a panel of experts, and Dr Nina Bal, Advanced Facial Aesthetics Clinician and founder of Facial Sculpting, began by correcting the premise. "There are two different types of pore," she told the magazine. "One releases sebum, the body's natural oil, and the other releases sweat. Pores enable the oil, sweat and sebum to go from our glands to the surface of our skin, which is essential for healthy skin."
That is why the goal in clinic is never removal. Pores are part of working skin and cannot be closed or erased. What can change is how visible they are, and that comes from managing oil, keeping the pore clear and improving the quality and firmness of the skin around it, so the opening is less shadowed and less stretched.
The treatments that do that work are explained in the guide to skin quality and radiance, alongside acne and acne scarring where oil is the driver. Which route suits a particular skin is settled at the consultation, and current costs are on the prices page.
