Wrinkle treatment has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments used to combat the most outward signs of ageing. It is a simple yet effective procedure, but to produce natural and consistent results it requires experience and an understanding of the underlying facial anatomy.
At our clinics, Dr Nina offers a consultation with a variety of treatment options to target unwanted wrinkles.
What causes wrinkles to form
Facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles at a young age. These lines deepen as the person gets older and the production of collagen decreases, causing the skin to become thinner, drier, and less elastic. This leads to deep wrinkles, creases, and facial lines.
Genetics play a role in the ageing process, but many external factors can also affect the development of wrinkles. These include:
- sun exposure
- some medications
The wrinkle treatment can relax the facial muscles, blocking the chemical signals that cause muscles to contract. If the muscles can no longer tighten, the skin flattens, giving a less wrinkled and smoother appearance.
The treatment can also prevent deeper lines from forming over time, or it can fill the loss of volume replenishing the collagen lost.
Wrinkle Treatment Quick Facts
- The wrinkle treatment helps relax certain wrinkle-causing muscles in the face, producing a younger and more refreshed appearance.
- The onset of action is 4 days, and the average longevity of the wrinkle treatments is usually three to four months, but it can last up to six months.
- The treatment has a proven safety record for over 25 years.
Wrinkle treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which blocks the electrical impulses that make the facial muscles contract. Used as a cosmetic ingredient, it can be injected into your muscles to temporarily block signals from your nervous system that tell certain muscles to move.
As we mentioned, since wrinkles and lines on your face are caused by your muscles making the same contraction over and over, blocking this signal can minimize the appearance of these wrinkles. Botulinum toxin injections can also slow the formation of new lines by preventing the contraction of facial muscles.
Treating wrinkles with botulinum toxin is a minimally invasive procedure, simple and straightforward. It does not involve incisions or general anaesthesia and has minimal downtime.
Anti-wrinkle injections with botulinum toxin are most commonly used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet or smile lines.
How does the treatment work
Before your treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr Nina to discuss your concerning areas, ideal results, side effects and to disclose any medications or medical history.
48 hours before the treatment you should avoid drinking any alcohol. On the day of the procedure, a thin, sterilized needle is used to inject the neurotoxin into the targeted areas. The toxin will then diffuse down gradually into the muscle.
This type of procedure will typically require multiple injections, but it should not take long (typically less than an hour). If you are concerned about pain or discomfort, a topical anaesthetic or ice can numb the treatment area.
Aftercare and Results
Right after the procedure, you may notice a stinging or numbness in the area of your injections. These side effects should wear off within a day or so.
Wrinkle treatment requires minimal recovery and downtime. The procedure itself is a quick one, and you may even be able to return to work immediately afterwards. You should avoid working out for at least a few hours after the injections. But after 24 hours, you should be able to resume all your normal activities.
While you may feel some lack of response from your muscles right away, botulinum takes several days to take full effect. Within 3 to 4 days, you will start to see results, but it may take up to 14 days to see the best results.
On average, anti-wrinkle injections last for three to four months, but results can last up to six months, depending on the dose administered, the individual’s metabolism and the strength of the muscle injected. After this time, you may decide to go for maintenance appointments twice a year or more.
Side Effects and Contraindications
Botulinum toxin injections are considered safe for most people, but there are possible side effects risks. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, bleeding, mild burning or discomfort.
Other, more serious side effects can indicate complications from the treatment but are extremely rare.
Women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should not have botulinum injections. Also, patients that have a previous allergic reaction to it should avoid this type of treatment.
Wrinkle treatment options at Facial Sculpting
We always require a full consultation with the patient, to be able to attend to areas of concern and devise a tailored treatment plan for each of our clients.
We also offer a review 2-3 weeks after the initial treatment, when we will discuss the results and the possibility of a top-up.
If you are planning to have a wrinkle treatment done for a special event, we recommend scheduling the first treatment four to six months in advance, so that you can plan the specifics of your top-up treatment potentially three months later.
