The treatment

What is SkinPen?

SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device and was the first microneedling device in the world to be FDA-cleared, with a reputation for safety and consistency. During treatment, its sterile, single-use tip glides across the skin creating thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels. These trigger the skin’s natural wound-healing response, which in turn stimulates the production of fresh collagen and elastin — the proteins that keep skin firm, smooth and resilient.

As that new collagen forms over the following weeks, the skin gradually looks smoother and more even, with softened texture, refined pores and an improvement in the appearance of scarring — SkinPen is specifically recognised for helping the look of acne scars and neck wrinkles. Because the depth is tailored to your skin and the micro-channels close quickly, downtime is minimal: most people have mild redness, similar to light sunburn, for about one to three days. We usually recommend a course of 3–6 sessions, around 4–6 weeks apart, for the best, longer-lasting results.

SkinPen is one of several skin-quality treatments — see our skin health treatments for how it compares with options such as radiofrequency microneedling or the Aquagold facial, and the honest limitations below for where another route may suit you better.

Concerns it can help

What does SkinPen address?

SkinPen is designed to refine skin texture, soften scarring and stimulate your own collagen.

Honest suitability

Is SkinPen right for you?

SkinPen is not for everyone — and we will tell you if it is not the best option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

Often well suited

  • Rough or uneven texture and enlarged-looking pores
  • The look of acne scarring or other soft scarring
  • Neck wrinkles and early signs of ageing
  • All skin types, including deeper skin tones
  • Happy to follow a short course for the best result
  • Realistic expectations of a gradual, collagen-led improvement

May not be suitable

  • Active or inflamed acne, eczema or rosacea flare in the area
  • Active skin infection or a current cold sore outbreak
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (subject to clinic policy)
  • Certain medications (e.g. recent oral isotretinoin) or medical conditions
  • Expecting it to lift skin or remove deep static wrinkles

The process

How SkinPen works, step by step

  1. Consultation & skin assessmentDr Nina or the team assess your skin, concerns, medical history and goals, and confirm whether SkinPen is suitable or whether another option is more effective.
  2. Cleanse & numbingThe skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied for your comfort.
  3. MicroneedlingThe sterile, single-use SkinPen tip is glided across the skin at a tailored depth, creating thousands of controlled micro-channels.
  4. Soothe & protectA calming serum is applied and the skin is protected; you may look flushed, similar to light sunburn.
  5. Aftercare & your courseYou receive detailed aftercare — including no makeup or SPF for the first 48 hours — and any further sessions in your course are planned 4–6 weeks apart.

“A less-is-more philosophy: SkinPen only when it genuinely suits your skin — working with your own biology for smoother, healthier-looking skin.”

The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina Bal

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A consultation and skin assessment are recommended before SkinPen. During your appointment with Dr Nina and her team your skin is assessed, your medical history reviewed and your suitability confirmed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail — what to expect during and after — and given the opportunity to ask questions.

The consultation covers your skin type and concerns, any contraindications or medications, realistic expected outcomes, how a course and home care work together, aftercare and sun protection, and confirmation of your individual plan and price.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

SkinPen involves minimal downtime. Most people have mild redness and a warm, tight feeling — similar to light sunburn — for about one to three days, sometimes with very light flaking as the skin renews. An important aftercare point: you should avoid makeup, and even SPF, for the first 48 hours while the micro-channels close, then reintroduce gentle skincare and daily sun protection as advised.

Results & longevity: because SkinPen works by stimulating your own collagen, results build gradually. Some early freshness can be seen within days, but the fuller effect develops over about four weeks and continues over a course. Results are not permanent; collagen turnover and maintenance sessions help sustain them, and outcomes vary with skin type, concern, lifestyle and aftercare.

Typical results timeline

First 24–48 hours

Redness and a tight, warm feeling like light sunburn; no makeup or SPF while the skin settles.

Days 3–5

Redness fades; skin may feel slightly dry or flaky as it renews.

~4 weeks

New collagen brings visibly smoother texture and a fresher, more even complexion.

Over your course

Texture, scarring and firmness continue to improve session by session, supported by home care.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

SkinPen is a minimally invasive medical treatment and is generally very well tolerated, but as with any microneedling there are some possible effects: redness, mild swelling, a tight or warm feeling, pinpoint marks and light flaking that usually settle within a few days. Less common effects, and the small risk of infection if aftercare is not followed, are discussed in full at consultation — which is why the no-makeup, no-SPF 48-hour rule matters.

Careful skin assessment, the right needling depth and an experienced practitioner are important for a safe, sensible result. SkinPen is suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones, with a low risk of pigmentation changes when performed correctly. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What SkinPen cannot do

  • It refines texture and softens scarring — it does not lift or tighten sagging skin.
  • It cannot remove deep static wrinkles or replace injectables, energy devices or surgery.
  • A single session helps, but the best results come from a tailored course.
  • Results are not permanent and rely on collagen turnover, maintenance and good skincare.

Your questions

SkinPen FAQs

What is SkinPen and how does it work?

SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device — the first in the world to be FDA-cleared. Its sterile tip creates thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin, which trigger your natural healing response and stimulate fresh collagen and elastin. As that collagen builds, the skin looks smoother, firmer and more even over the following weeks.

How much does SkinPen cost in London?

SkinPen at Facial Sculpting is from £350 per session. For the best results it is usually recommended as a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance. Your exact plan and price are confirmed after a skin assessment.

What does SkinPen treat?

SkinPen helps refine rough or uneven texture, soften the look of scarring — including acne scars — reduce the appearance of neck wrinkles and enlarged pores, and refresh overall skin quality. It is specifically recognised for improving the appearance of acne scars and neck wrinkles. It improves skin quality rather than lifting or tightening sagging skin.

How many SkinPen sessions will I need?

For the best results we usually recommend a course of 3–6 treatments, spaced around 4–6 weeks apart to allow collagen to rebuild between sessions. The exact number depends on your skin and concern — for example, scarring often needs a fuller course — and is confirmed at consultation.

Is there much downtime after SkinPen?

Downtime is minimal. Most people have mild redness and a tight, warm feeling — similar to light sunburn — for about one to three days, sometimes with light flaking. Importantly, you should avoid makeup and even SPF for the first 48 hours while the micro-channels close, then follow the aftercare you are given.

Why can’t I wear makeup or SPF for 48 hours?

For the first 48 hours the micro-channels created during treatment are still closing, so applying makeup or SPF could introduce product or irritate freshly treated skin and raise the small risk of infection. Once this window has passed, you reintroduce gentle skincare and daily sun protection. We give you clear, tailored aftercare to follow.

Is SkinPen suitable for all skin types?

Yes. SkinPen is safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones, because microneedling does not use heat or light and carries a low risk of hyperpigmentation when performed correctly. Suitability is still assessed first, as some skin conditions, a history of keloid scarring or certain medications may mean treatment is delayed or another option is recommended.

Is SkinPen good for acne scars?

Yes — SkinPen is well recognised for improving the appearance of acne scars by stimulating collagen and remodelling the skin over a course. Soft, rolling scars often respond particularly well. Scarring usually needs several sessions, and Dr Nina will assess your skin and set realistic expectations about how much improvement to expect.

Does SkinPen hurt?

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to keep you comfortable, so most people feel only a light scratching or vibrating sensation. Afterwards the skin can feel warm and tight, like mild sunburn, for a day or two. Your practitioner will explain exactly what to expect.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Some early freshness can appear within a few days, but because results rely on new collagen, the fuller effect develops over about four weeks and continues to build over a course. Results are long-lasting but not permanent — collagen naturally turns over, so periodic maintenance helps sustain them. Individual results vary.

How is SkinPen different from RF microneedling?

SkinPen is microneedling alone — it relies on the controlled micro-channels to stimulate collagen, and is excellent for texture and scarring. Radiofrequency microneedling adds heat energy through the needles for an additional skin-tightening effect, which can suit mild laxity as well as texture. Dr Nina will advise which is more appropriate for your skin and goals.

How is SkinPen different from the Aquagold facial?

SkinPen works deeper to remodel texture, scarring and collagen over a course, with a little more downtime. The Aquagold facial is a superficial micro-infusion that delivers a bespoke serum blend for an immediate glow with minimal downtime. They serve different goals, and some patients use both at different times.

Can SkinPen be combined with other treatments?

Yes. SkinPen pairs well with Target Cool exosomes, which can be added to soothe the skin and support recovery, and is often planned alongside skin boosters such as Profhilo. The team will advise what is sensible to combine and the right order, so treatments support rather than overload your skin.

Is a consultation required before SkinPen?

A consultation and skin assessment are recommended to check your skin and concerns, review your medical history and any medications, confirm whether SkinPen is suitable (or whether another option is better), and agree your plan and price. This helps ensure a safe, sensible result.
