Treatment summary

Anti-Wrinkle Injections at a glance

Anti-wrinkle injections use small, precise doses of botulinum toxin type A to relax the facial muscles that create expression lines. They are designed to soften and slow the formation of dynamic lines on the upper face — frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet — for a refreshed look that keeps natural movement. It is a prescription medicine, used only after a consultation and assessment, and results vary from person to person.

The treatment

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a straightforward, minimally invasive treatment using botulinum toxin type A, the most established way to soften the lines created by facial expression. Everyday movements — frowning, raising the brows, squinting and smiling — repeatedly fold the skin in the same places, and over time those creases become etched in. A few tiny injections relax the specific muscle responsible, so it contracts less, the overlying skin is no longer pulled into a deep crease, and the line gradually smooths.

The aim is a refreshed, well-rested look rather than a frozen one. Used carefully, in measured doses placed with an understanding of your facial anatomy, you keep natural expression while the most ageing dynamic lines soften. The most commonly treated areas are the frown lines between the brows (glabella), the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes — priced as one, two or three areas. Because it is a prescription medicine, treatment is only carried out after a consultation and assessment confirming it is suitable for you.

Anti-wrinkle injections sit within our wider facial sculpting treatments and are often combined with options such as a brow lift or skin boosters — see the honest limitations below for where a different approach may suit your concern better.

Concerns it can help

What does Anti-Wrinkle Injections address?

Anti-wrinkle injections are designed for the dynamic expression lines of the upper face — softened, not erased.

Honest suitability

Is Anti-Wrinkle Injections right for you?

Anti-wrinkle injections are not for everyone — and we will tell you if they are not the best option for you. Final suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

Often well suited

  • Dynamic frown, forehead or crow’s-feet lines that show on movement
  • Wanting a softer, refreshed look that still moves naturally
  • Early lines you would like to slow before they become etched in
  • Happy with a result that is maintained every few months
  • In good general health with realistic expectations
  • Looking for a quick, minimal-downtime treatment

May not be suitable

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (not recommended)
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis)
  • Known allergy to botulinum toxin or its ingredients
  • Active infection or skin condition in the treatment area
  • Deep, fixed (static) lines that may need more than toxin alone
  • Expecting a completely frozen, motionless result

The process

How anti-wrinkle injections work, step by step

  1. Consultation & assessmentDr Nina or the team assess your facial movement, anatomy, medical history and goals, confirm anti-wrinkle injections are suitable, and agree how many areas to treat.
  2. Cleanse & mappingThe skin is cleansed and the precise injection points are mapped to your individual muscle pattern for a balanced, natural result.
  3. The injectionsA series of tiny injections is placed into the targeted muscles using very fine needles; most people find this quick and easily tolerated.
  4. Straight back to your dayThe appointment takes only a few minutes and there is minimal downtime — you can usually return to normal activities the same day.
  5. Review & maintenanceThe effect develops over up to two weeks; a review can be arranged, with maintenance typically every three to four months.

“A less-is-more philosophy: refreshed, never frozen — for a face that still looks and moves like you.”

The Facial Sculpting approach · Dr Nina Bal

Before treatment

What happens at your consultation

A consultation is required before anti-wrinkle injections, because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine. During your initial consultation with Dr Nina and her team you will have a clinical assessment, your suitability reviewed, and your facial movement and goals discussed. You will be talked through the procedure in detail — what to expect during and after — and given the opportunity to ask questions.

The consultation covers your medical history, an assessment of your expression lines and anatomy, your suitability and any contraindications, realistic expected outcomes, alternatives if injections are not ideal, aftercare, and confirmation of how many areas to treat and the price.

Results & recovery

What to expect afterwards

Anti-wrinkle injections involve minimal downtime and require very little aftercare — most people return to their normal day straight away. A small bruise, slight redness or pinpoint swelling at an injection site can occur and usually settles quickly. We advise staying upright, avoiding heavy exercise, facials and rubbing the area for the rest of the day, and your team will give you tailored aftercare.

Results & longevity: the effect is not immediate — it begins around three to fourteen days after treatment and settles by about two weeks. Results typically last around three to four months, after which movement gradually returns and maintenance appointments (often three to four times a year) keep the effect. Onset and duration vary with the dose, the muscle treated and your individual metabolism.

Typical results timeline

Day of treatment

A few tiny injections; any pinpoint redness or small bruise usually fades quickly.

Days 3–14

The treated muscles gradually relax and the lines begin to soften.

~2 weeks

The result has settled; a review or top-up can be arranged if needed.

~3–4 months

Movement gradually returns; a maintenance appointment keeps the effect.

Safety

Possible risks & side effects

Anti-wrinkle injections have been used safely for many years and are generally well tolerated. As with any injectable, common effects are usually minor and temporary — a small bruise, slight swelling or redness, or a short-lived mild headache. Less commonly, a temporary heaviness or slight asymmetry of the brow or eyelid can occur if the toxin spreads to a nearby muscle; this is uncommon, settles as the effect wears off, and is minimised by careful, anatomy-led placement.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine that should only be given after assessment by a qualified practitioner, and careful patient selection matters. Dr Nina will discuss less common risks in full at your consultation. If anything is unexpected after treatment, you can contact the clinic for advice.

Honest limitations

What anti-wrinkle injections cannot do

  • It softens dynamic lines but cannot fully erase deep, fixed (static) creases on its own.
  • It does not add volume or lift loss of facial structure — that is a job for other treatments.
  • It is not permanent — the effect wears off and maintenance is needed every few months.
  • It is not suitable in pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain neuromuscular conditions.

Patient review
"I have been seeing Dr Nina now for a couple of years and there is nobody else I would trust with my face. I initially saw someone else and had no effect with the anti wrinkle treatments and was told they didn’t work for me. I was really conscious of a deep forehead wrinkle that I had. I then tried Dr Nina and it disappeared after the first treatment. Have been coming back since, always such a pleasant experience."

Your questions

Anti-wrinkle injections: your questions answered

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections use small, precise doses of botulinum toxin type A to relax the facial muscles that create expression lines. By reducing how strongly those muscles contract, the overlying lines — most often frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet — gradually soften for a refreshed look. It is a prescription medicine given only after consultation.

What areas can be treated?

The most common areas are the frown lines between the brows (the glabella), the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes. These are priced as one, two or three areas. Other uses, such as a brow lift or jawline slimming, are treated as separate dedicated treatments. Your plan is tailored at consultation.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

Lines of expression form because the same muscles fold the skin in the same place thousands of times. Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal to the targeted muscle, so it relaxes and contracts less. With the repeated folding reduced, the skin is no longer pulled into a deep crease and the line softens over the following days.

Do anti-wrinkle injections hurt?

Most people find the treatment quick and easily tolerated. Very fine needles are used and the injections feel like brief, small pinpricks; anaesthetic is not usually needed. Any stinging is momentary, and the whole appointment typically takes only a few minutes.

How long until I see results?

Anti-wrinkle injections are not instant. The effect usually begins around three to fourteen days after treatment and is fully settled by about two weeks. We often arrange a review at the two-week point so any fine adjustment can be made. Onset varies a little from person to person.

How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?

On average the effect lasts around three to four months, depending on the dose administered, your metabolism and the strength of the muscle treated. After this, movement gradually returns and most people have a maintenance appointment three to four times a year to keep the effect.

Will my face look frozen?

Not when treated carefully. The aim at Facial Sculpting is a refreshed, well-rested look rather than a frozen one. By using measured doses placed for your individual anatomy, the most ageing lines soften while you keep natural expression. We deliberately avoid over-treating.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal and aftercare is simple — most people return to their normal day straight away. A small bruise or pinpoint redness can occur at an injection site and settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise, facials and rubbing the area for the rest of the day.

Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

Botulinum toxin has been used safely in aesthetic medicine for many years and is generally well tolerated. As a prescription medicine, it should only be given after assessment by a qualified practitioner. Careful patient selection and anatomy-led placement are central to a safe, natural result, and Dr Nina will discuss any less common risks at your consultation.

What are the possible side effects?

Common effects are usually minor and temporary: a small bruise, slight swelling or redness, or a short-lived mild headache. Less commonly, a temporary heaviness or slight asymmetry of the brow or eyelid can occur if the product spreads to a nearby muscle; this is uncommon and resolves as the effect wears off.

How many areas do I need?

It depends on which lines bother you. Many people treat the upper face as three areas (frown, forehead and crow’s feet), but you can choose one or two areas instead. Dr Nina will recommend a balanced plan at consultation — sometimes fewer areas give a more natural result.

Can anti-wrinkle injections be combined with other treatments?

Yes. They are often combined with a brow lift, skin boosters such as Profhilo®, or dermal fillers where loss of volume rather than movement is the concern. Treating movement and structure together can give a more balanced result. Dr Nina will advise on what is appropriate and the right sequence.

Can anti-wrinkle injections remove deep lines?

They are most effective on dynamic lines that appear with movement. Deep, fixed (static) creases that are visible at rest may soften but not disappear with toxin alone, and may benefit from a combination approach over time. Dr Nina will tell you honestly what to expect for your particular lines.

Who should not have anti-wrinkle injections?

They are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, or where there is a known allergy to the product. Active infection or a skin condition in the area also needs to settle first. Suitability is always confirmed at consultation.

How much do anti-wrinkle injections cost in London?

At Facial Sculpting, anti-wrinkle injections start from £400 for one area, £500 for two areas and £600 for three areas. The exact plan depends on the areas you choose to treat and is confirmed at your consultation.

Is a consultation required before treatment?

Yes. Because botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine, a consultation and assessment are required to review your medical history and facial movement, confirm suitability, discuss realistic outcomes and alternatives, and agree how many areas to treat and the price.
