Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections use small, precise doses of botulinum toxin type A to relax the facial muscles that create expression lines. By reducing how strongly those muscles contract, the overlying lines — most often frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet — gradually soften for a refreshed look. It is a prescription medicine given only after consultation.

The most common areas are the frown lines between the brows (the glabella), the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes. These are priced as one, two or three areas. Other uses, such as a brow lift or jawline slimming, are treated as separate dedicated treatments. Your plan is tailored at consultation.

Lines of expression form because the same muscles fold the skin in the same place thousands of times. Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal to the targeted muscle, so it relaxes and contracts less. With the repeated folding reduced, the skin is no longer pulled into a deep crease and the line softens over the following days.

Most people find the treatment quick and easily tolerated. Very fine needles are used and the injections feel like brief, small pinpricks; anaesthetic is not usually needed. Any stinging is momentary, and the whole appointment typically takes only a few minutes.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not instant. The effect usually begins around three to fourteen days after treatment and is fully settled by about two weeks. We often arrange a review at the two-week point so any fine adjustment can be made. Onset varies a little from person to person.

On average the effect lasts around three to four months, depending on the dose administered, your metabolism and the strength of the muscle treated. After this, movement gradually returns and most people have a maintenance appointment three to four times a year to keep the effect.

Not when treated carefully. The aim at Facial Sculpting is a refreshed, well-rested look rather than a frozen one. By using measured doses placed for your individual anatomy, the most ageing lines soften while you keep natural expression. We deliberately avoid over-treating.

Downtime is minimal and aftercare is simple — most people return to their normal day straight away. A small bruise or pinpoint redness can occur at an injection site and settles quickly. We advise avoiding heavy exercise, facials and rubbing the area for the rest of the day.

Botulinum toxin has been used safely in aesthetic medicine for many years and is generally well tolerated. As a prescription medicine, it should only be given after assessment by a qualified practitioner. Careful patient selection and anatomy-led placement are central to a safe, natural result, and Dr Nina will discuss any less common risks at your consultation.

Common effects are usually minor and temporary: a small bruise, slight swelling or redness, or a short-lived mild headache. Less commonly, a temporary heaviness or slight asymmetry of the brow or eyelid can occur if the product spreads to a nearby muscle; this is uncommon and resolves as the effect wears off.

It depends on which lines bother you. Many people treat the upper face as three areas (frown, forehead and crow’s feet), but you can choose one or two areas instead. Dr Nina will recommend a balanced plan at consultation — sometimes fewer areas give a more natural result.

Yes. They are often combined with a brow lift, skin boosters such as Profhilo®, or dermal fillers where loss of volume rather than movement is the concern. Treating movement and structure together can give a more balanced result. Dr Nina will advise on what is appropriate and the right sequence.

They are most effective on dynamic lines that appear with movement. Deep, fixed (static) creases that are visible at rest may soften but not disappear with toxin alone, and may benefit from a combination approach over time. Dr Nina will tell you honestly what to expect for your particular lines.

They are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, or where there is a known allergy to the product. Active infection or a skin condition in the area also needs to settle first. Suitability is always confirmed at consultation.
