Face fillers are popular cosmetic procedures for your face given through injections to reduce the signs of ageing and help you restore a natural and fresh look. They are minimally invasive, meaning they do not involve surgery, and they are often administered in conjunction with other facial aesthetic treatments such as botulinum toxin type A.

In this post, we will explain everything you need to know about face fillers, so you can then go on and choose the perfect cosmetic procedures for your face to look your best!

Face Fillers: Top Aesthetic Treatments for the Best Version of Yourself

Did you know that many visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss?

As facial tissues thin out, due to the fact that our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat and collagen as we age, lines around the mouth and crow’s feet become more visible and cheeks may look a little hollow. Sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle can also add and accelerate this process.

Here are a few of the common issues face fillers can help address:

  • Smooth out lines around nose and mouth
  • Enhance and restore volume to sunken cheeks or temples
  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Plump and enhance the lips
  • Smooth out a chin crease
  • Improve symmetry among facial features and generally restore a more youthful appearance

More than one million men and women annually choose this popular facial aesthetic treatment, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Not surprisingly, given that face fillers can be a cost-effective way to look like the best version of yourself without surgery or downtime.

In the past, there used to be just a few options for turning back the clock without having to undergo invasive plastic surgeries. But today, you can slow down and – in many cases – reverse the effects of time on your face thanks to cosmetic surgery.

Nina Bal is an expert in administrating a wide range of facial aesthetic treatments, from fillers to chemical peels, to skin boosters and many others that you can find on her Facial Sculpting website.

In fact, minimally invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedures are Nina Bal’s specialty, as she is most passionate about enhancing a patient’s innate beauty rather than changing her/his appearance completely.

Her philosophy is ‘less is more’ and she loves to make subtle aesthetic tweaks that lead to excellent, yet natural, results.

She is a member of the Save Face (the UK National Register of Accredited Practitioners that provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments) and winner of the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards 2018 in the Facial Aesthetics category – Full Facial Treatment. She also won Finalist in the Facial Aesthetics – Dermal Fillers category in 2019.

What Are Face Fillers?

Face fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to help diminish facial lines by restoring lost volume and fullness in the face.

While botulinum toxin remains a popular treatment to treat wrinkles caused by muscle activity, injectable face fillers are used to replace lost volume in the face and are available in increasing varieties.

But face fillers are also effective in redefining the symmetry of the face by balancing volumes and making the face aesthetically more attractive.

Here are a few examples of what they can do:

What Are Fillers Made Of?

The most widely used filler products are autologous fat, collagens, hyaluronic acid, and synthetic polymers.

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Currently, hyaluronic acids are the dominant facial filler agent. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin, which helps keep skin plump and hydrated. Unfortunately, its production decreases with ages, which is why this substance is one of the best skincare ingredients for anti-ageing treatments and products. HA fillers include Juvéderm and Restylane products (also known as skin boosters).

  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. It is typically used in fillers to target deeper lines and wrinkles, and it is also reported to help stimulate natural collagen production. CaHA fillers include Radiesse, which results can last up to 12 to 20 months after injection.

  • Poly-Caprolactone (PCL)

Poly-Caprolactone is a well-known totally bioresorbable soft medical polymer. One of Nina Bal’s most used fillers, Ellanse, is made of Poly-Caprolactone microspheres suspended in a gel carrier consists of mainly water and glycerine. When injected into the skin, it acts as an instant filler giving instant results. Ellanse also stimulates the production of new collagen in and around the treated area.

At Facial Sculpting, we use only the best quality products approved in UK. These include Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Ellanse, all extremely safe temporary fillers. Ellanse and Radiesse also acts as a collagen stimulator, adding more volume and definition.

To inject fillers under the skin, Nina Bal uses Pediatric 32 gauge needles, the smallest needles available on the market, which cause minimal pain.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

Who is a good candidate for face fillers?

You may be a good candidate for face fillers if you:
– are physically healthy
– do not smoke
– have a positive outlook and realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance
– are committed to maintaining good skin health

Who is not a good candidate for face fillers?

Face fillers are considered very safe, however they are not recommended if:
– you are suffering from skin infections
– you have experienced any reactions to local anaesthetic
– you’re taking any medicines which affect bleeding
– you have an autoimmune disease
– you are pregnant
– you are under 18

Does the procedure hurt?

The procedure is virtually painless. Thanks to a topical anaesthetic cream applied prior to the treatment, the area will be numbed to make the procedure as painless as possible.

What happens after the treatment?

You may experience at times slight swelling after the treatment so therefore ice packs can be applied or ibuprofen if you are uncomfortable. Make-up should be avoided for the first 12 hours after the treatment.

How long do the results last?

The results of the treatment can last up to 6-12 months sometimes longer depending on how fast your metabolism works. For those with a very fast metabolic rate, the face filler will break down more rapidly than in those with a slower metabolic rate.

Are there any side effects?

Again, the procedure is considered quite safe but all treatments carry a certain degree of risk. All risks and complications will be discussed with Nina Bal at the consultation appointment.

Which face filler do I need?

With so many dermal filler products on the market, it can be difficult to know which option is best for you without guidance from an expert. Each product is uniquely formulated to have a certain texture, density, and injection depth, which means that certain fillers work better for certain areas of concern. Again, rest assured Nina Bal will determine what product is best for you upon consultation.

Face Filllers: What to Expect from the Procedure

Face filler injections are minimally invasive procedures typically completed during an office visit. Your initial treatment will begin with a consultation, during which you will meet with Nina Bal to discuss your concerns and goals.

During the consultation, Nina Bal will evaluate your area of concern and review your medical history. Make sure to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardize your safety or results.

Just before the treatment start, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection. Nina Bal will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin.

Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after the injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment.

You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment, but you should try to avoid exercise or other strenuous activities for at least 48 hours.

Best Skin Tightening Treatments

As mentioned, how long the results of face fillers will last depends on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient’s metabolism. To maintain your results, you will simply need to repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to ensure optimal results.

Generally speaking, hyaluronic acid fillers tend to be the most temporary option, typically lasting from 6 to 18 months. Therefore they are often recommended for first-time filler patients.

Synthetic fillers tend to last longer, as they are not absorbed by the body. They can be a great option for the right patient, but you’ll want to be ready to commit to results that will be there for several years.

Face Fillers: Final Considerations

Minimally invasive rejuvenation treatments, such as face fillers, may help delay the time when consideration of a facelift becomes appropriate, but cannot achieve the same results of surgery.

It is important to remember that dermal fillers are temporary treatments for facial aging and that ongoing treatments will be needed for long-term results.
