Fissure sealants are a safe and painless way to protect your children’s teeth from tooth decay.
Fissures – small gaps – and grooves occur naturally in the teeth.
Fissure sealants are flowable resin coatings that cover the chewing surfaces of the molars. The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth.
The treatment is usually carried out between 6 and 7 years of age for the first molars. Adult molars are usually sealed as soon as they appear, which can be any time between 11 and 14 years.
The treatment is painless and can last many years.
